Bulldogs Post Big Wins at ITA Regional

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The second day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional was a successful one for the Georgia men's tennis program. Five Bulldogs advanced to the Round of 32 in the main singles draw, while three doubles pairs are moving onto the Round of 16.
Senior Blake Croyder and junior Erik Grevelius got the day started with an 8-3 win over Harvey Maughan and Deigo Padilha of Georgia State. Teammates Hamish Stewart and Philip Henning also notched a win in the Round of 32 over Tao Castillo and Pol Del Castillo of Georgia State, 8-2.
The tandem of Blake Croyder and Erik Grevelius had a dominant showing in the Round of 16 with an 8-2 win over Juan Martin Jalif and Ilarion Danilchenko of Miami. The pair will compete in the Quarterfinals tomorrow.
Thomas Paulsell and Miguel Perez Peña fell in the Round of 32 to Lucas Wayenburg and David Georgadze of Miami in a close 8-6 match. Their teammates Stewart and Henning were defeated in the Round of 16 by Leyton Cronje and Trey Hilderbrand of UCF 8-1.
Georgia had a commanding showing in the main draw Round of 64 Friday afternoon with five out of eight Bulldogs advancing to the Round of 32 tomorrow. Perez Peña got the momentum started for Georgia, knocking off the tenth seed Mattias Siimar from the host team in straight sets 6-4,6-2. Another powerful showing from a Bulldog freshmen was Thomas Paulsell's 6-4,6-2 win over T. Castillo of GSU.
Two more Bulldogs downed their opponents straight sets. Grevelius defeated Munuel Goncalves of USF 6-2,6-1, while Henning grabbed another win for Georgia by taking down Chen Dong of Georgia Tech 6-3,6-3.
Croyder put on a show with a three set comeback to advance to the Round of 32. Croyder defeated Jalif of Miami 3-6,6-3,6-1.
Britton Johnston was defeated by Richard Thongoana of FSU 3-6,3-6. Mathis Debru was taken down by Keshav Chopra of Georgia Tech 1-6,4-6. Hamish Stewart fell to Domink Barton of North Florida in a three set competition 2-6,6-4,2-6.
Action will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET Saturday with Main Draw Singles. There will be two rounds of main draw singles, two rounds of consolation singles and four matches of main draw doubles.
This weekend's ITA Southeast Regional features players from 15 teams, including Georgia, Florida, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida State, Central Florida, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Miami, North Florida, South Florida and Stetson.
