Bulldogs Open 2021 Season with Georgia Diving Invitational

January 02, 2021 | Swimming & Diving

ATHENS, Ga. – Following a six-week hiatus, the University of Georgia diving team returns to competition Sunday with the 2021 Georgia Diving Invitational at Gabrielsen Natatorium. The Bulldogs will be joined at the three-day event by student-athletes from SEC rivals South Carolina and Tennessee, as well as NC State.

Each day of competition will begin at 11 a.m. and will feature two diving sessions. The meet opens Sunday with the women's 3-meter and men's 1-meter, followed by the women's platform and men's 3-meter on Monday. The invitational closes Tuesday morning with the women's 1-meter and men's platform.

This weekend's meet provides an outstanding opportunity for the Bulldogs' divers to qualify for the upcoming NCAA Zone B Diving Championships this March in Greensboro, North Carolina. On the men's side, senior Zach Allen, a NCAA qualifier last season on the 1-meter, has already posted qualifying scores on both springboard events and will make his debut on the platform. In his last outing at the Georgia Fall Invitational, Allen placed first on the 3-meter and second on the 1-meter, giving him a total of four meet victories this season along with SEC Diver of the Week honors on Oct. 27. In the men's competition, Allen will be joined by junior Hudson Coldren, who is also competing in all three events.

For the Georgia women, freshman Meghan Wenzel has immediately made her mark for the team, qualifying for Zones in all three events. Wenzel earned a win on the 1-meter against Auburn on Nov. 6 and finished second on the 3-meter at the Georgia Invitational. In each of her eight performances, she has posted a score that exceeded the Zone-cut mark, including a 312.15 on the 3-meter at South Carolina.

Junior Ellie Crump has also turned in a strong season, qualifying on both springboards, including a third-place finish on the 1-meter at the Georgia Invitational. She will also be making her debut on the platform at this event. The Bulldogs will also feature sophomore Raquel Mason, who narrowly missed a Zone cut on the platform at the fall invite, and redshirt junior Ambria D'Alonzo, who finished fourth on the 1-meter in November. Additionally, Missouri transfer Tally Brown will be making her Georgia debut on the 1- and 3-meter springboards.

Live results from the Georgia Diving Invitational will be available on DiveMeets, in addition to live updates on Twitter at @UGASwimDive.
