GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Georgia Lady Bulldog basketball team saw its run in the Southeastern Conference tournament come to an end with an 89-56 loss to No. 1 South Carolina on Friday.
Georgia falls to 17-14 overall, while South Carolina improves to 27-1 and has won 24-straight games.
Jenna Staiti recorded her ninth-straight double-figure scoring game with 16 points and six rebounds. The Gamecocks hit 56 percent from the field compared to just 36 percent from Georgia. The Lady Bulldogs also committed 23 turnovers in the loss.
"Give South Carolina ll the credit," head coach Joni Taylor said. "Every single time we made a run, they stepped up their defense and turned us over. We just did not have enough fire power on offense to keep up."
Staiti scored Georgia's first eight points in the game as the Gamecocks held to a slim 10-8 lead with 4:45 left in the first quarter. Turnovers and miscues allowed South Carolina to score seven-straight points in transition to take a 23-15 advantage after one.
The Gamecocks extended that lead to as much as 17, but 14 points from Staiti and a buzzer-beater by Gabby Connally kept Georgia within striking distance at the half, 45-31.
Caitlin Hose came off the bench to score seven points in the third quarter for the Lady Bulldogs, but the Gamecocks kept attacking the basket and built a 67-45 lead going into the fourth.
Georgia never could get any closer as South Carolina won, 89-56
