ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia golfer Davis Thompson has been chosen to compete for the United States in the Arnold Palmer Cup this summer, according to an announcement Wednesday by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

The Arnold Palmer Cup uses a Ryder Cup-style format and pits American collegiate golfers against their counterparts from Great Britain and Ireland. The event will take place July 3-5 at Lahinch Golf Club in County Clare, Ireland.

The United States leads the all-time series 12-10-1.

Thompson, a junior from Auburn, Ala., is currently No. 7 overall and No. 5 among Americans in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. He boasts a scoring average of 69.95, including nine rounds in the 60s. Thompson won the Jim Rivers Invitational last fall and has four additional top-10 finishes this season. He played on sponsor exemptions in the 2019 RSM Classic and the 2020 Puerto Rico Open on the PGA Tour. By virtue of winning the Jones Cup Invitational, he has earned another berth in the 2020 RSM Classic.

Georgia has a strong history with the Arnold Palmer Cup, which launched in 1997. Coach Chris Haack captained the 2002 and 2006 U.S. squads. Nick Cassini, Brian Harman, Russell Henley, Chris Kirk, and Adam Mitchell each played twice, while Erik Compton, Ryan Hybl, Lee McCoy, and Michael Morrison all played once.

"Obviously anytime you can represent your country, it's an awesome honor," Thompson said. "I'm just humbled and appreciative that the GCAA thought so highly of me. I'm thankful that my hard work is paying off. I can't wait to head to Ireland."
