Allen Clinches NCAA Berth on 1-Meter Springboard

ATHENS, Ga. – With a terrific comeback in finals, junior Zach Allen qualified for the NCAA Men's Championships in the 1-meter springboard Tuesday at the 2020 NCAA Zone B Diving Championships at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
Allen is the first University of Georgia diver to qualify for NCAAs this season, along with being his first time reaching the national championships. He will be the first Georgia men's diver to compete at NCAAs since Charlie Clifton and Ian Forlini in 2017.
After placing 12th in the preliminary round with a score of 309.70, Allen notched a mark of 341.90 for his final six dives, his second-highest score of the season in the 1-meter. He slowly built up his scores before posting a 64.50 in the third round and a 65.60 in the fifth to seal his spot in the top 10.
Allen's final total of 651.60 ranked third in the overall standings, behind Anton Down Jenkins of South Carolina and Joshua Davidson of Florida State. Elsewhere for Georgia, junior Josh Getty placed 35th with a score of 185.20.
In the women's 3-meter prelims, sophomore Ellie Crump finished 27th with a score of 253.05, remaining in contention for the final until the final dive as she concluded her season. Senior McKensi Austin placed 33rd with a mark of 240.75. The women's final was won by Miami's Mia Vallee with a score of 692.50.
The Zone B Championships will conclude Wednesday with men's and women's platform events. In both events, the top eight finishers will automatically qualify for NCAAs. The men's platform begins with prelims at 10 a.m., with the final slated for 11:45 a.m. The women's prelims start at 2:15 p.m., followed by the final at 4 p.m. Austin, senior Freida Lim, sophomore Kelliann Howell and freshman Raquel Mason will compete for the Lady Bulldogs in the event.
