Athens, Ga. – The 14th-ranked Georgia softball teamed opened the 11th Annual Bulldog Classic with a pair victories over Eastern Illinois and Boston College at Jack Turner Stadium Friday.

The Bulldogs scattered six hits, four of which went for extra bases including back-to-back home runs by freshman Sara Mosley and sophomore Lacey Fincher. Fincher finished the game 2-for-2.

Mary Wilson Avant (7-3) had a standout game, setting a new career high with fifteen strikeouts, fourteen of which were swinging. It was her first solo shutout of the season, limiting the Panthers to just two hits. It was Georgia's sixth shutout of the 2020 season.

All four of Georgia's runs came in the fourth inning. CJ Landrum reached with a single before advancing on an error. She was driven in by a double to left field by Sydney Kuma. Mosely knocked her fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot. Fincher followed with a solo shot to widen the lead to 4-0. It was the second time this season that the Bulldogs have hit back-to-back home runs, the last against Howard on Feb. 9.

Avant held the Panthers scoreless the remainder of the game en route to the victory for Georgia.

The Bulldogs had a total of eight hits during Friday's nightcap, scoring six runs. Senior Ciara Bryan led the way offensively with a 3-for-4 evening with an RBI and two runs scored, followed by aa 2-for-3 performance from Kuma with a pair of RBI. Mosley also contributed two RBI.

Lauren Mathis started the game for the Bulldogs in the circle. Alley Cutting (4-1) entered to pitch in the second inning, working five innings en route to the win. Laura Bishop came in to pitch in the seventh before exiting after allowing two bases-loaded walks. Mathis re-entered and threw one pitch to induce a game ending 6-4 double play to seal the deal to earn Georgia's first save of the season.

Bryan led the Bulldogs off with a double out to left field in the first inning. Kuma bunt for a hit and advanced to second on an error. Bryan scored the Bulldog's first run of the game on the same error.

Mosley lined a double to right center to drive in Bryan and Kuma in the third inning, widening Georgia's lead to 3-0. Another two-RBI double, this time by Kuma to left, added to the Bulldogs' lead in the fourth, 5-0.

Bryan's lone RBI of the game added an extra run in the sixth on an infield single to second base, 6-0.

Boston College broke up the shutout by loaded the bases and drawing a pair of bases-loaded walks in the top of the seventh. Mathis then re-entered to take over for Bishop. One pitch was all it took to get AJ Alatorre to lineout to Kuma who threw to second to double up the runner and end the game, 6-2.

Georgia faces off against Boston College again Saturday at 1 p.m. followed by a matchup against Western Carolina at 3:30 p.m.
