Georgia Beats No. 10 Tennessee for Diaz's 706th Win
February 28, 2020 | Men's Tennis
ATHENS — Wins at the top three singles positions sealed the Georgia men's tennis team's 4-2 victory against 10th-ranked Tennessee, handing Bulldog head coach Manuel Diaz his 706th career triumph.
Diaz is now tied with Georgia legend and 'the greatest Bulldog of them all' Dan Magill for the most wins in Southeastern Conference men's tennis history.
Friday's victory improves the Bulldogs' record to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.
"Our guys did a tremendous job today," Diaz said. "We faced some tough conditions out here and honestly did not play our best match. But we showed a ton of toughness, which is what we will need the rest of the year in every match we play. As far as win 706, for me it's about our players and all the work they have put in for this program over the years. It's an honor to be mentioned with my mentor Dan Magill. He did so much for our game, and I am just proud of what we have been able to accomplish."
Georgia clinched the doubles point with wins at the top two courts. After falling at the third position, the Bulldogs secured a win at No. 2, where the 22nd-ranked duo of Philip Henning and Blake Croyder ousted Adam Walton and Martim Prata, 6-4.
In a battle of two ranked doubles combos at the No. 1 court, Georgia's duo of Trent Bryde and Tyler Zink fought through a back and forth set and were down 0-40 at 4-4. The Bulldogs battled from behind and broke Tennessee's serve to go up 5-4. Zink then hit a tremendous return winner to defeat the Tennessee duo, 6-4.
The Vols quickly evened up the match in singles when Pat Harper defeated Robert Loeb, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 6 position.
Tennessee then took the lead for just a few seconds as Erik Grevelius fell, 6-3, 6-3 to Andrew Rogers. Henning answered back for the Bulldogs at court two, holding off Luca Wiedenmann, 6-2, 6-4.
After winning the first set, Bryde fended off No. 23-ranked Adam Walton in the second for a 6-3, 7-5 victory. Moments later, Zink delivered in a 6-0 third set to clinch the match in a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 triumph at court three.
Up next, Georgia hosts No. 2 Ohio State at 2 p.m. Sunday.
