Bulldogs To Celebrate Dan Magill Tennis Complex Legacy
February 21, 2020 | Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis
ATHENS----The Georgia tennis programs will honor the legacy set by Dan Magill and the University of Georgia tennis community throughout the outdoor season in conjunction with the latest $8.5 million renovation to the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The legendary Magill, who would've been 99 this year, helped make Athens and UGA the "Mecca of College Tennis." When the NCAAs went to a team format to decide its national champion in 1977, Magill volunteered to host the tournament at Georgia, and the Athens community responded. Georgia has gone on to play host to 32 NCAA Tennis Championships on the complex that was named for him in 1993.
The support the student-athletes received while competing for championships here is well-known across the globe. Georgia fans appreciate great tennis, whether it's cheering on their nationally ranked Bulldogs or just enjoying an NCAA match that showcases other elite student-athletes.
Former tennis players from around the world have shared their NCAA Championship memories of playing at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, and these will be highlighted on Georgia's social media outlets (Twitter and Instagram) in a series called "Magill Moments." Also, feature stories are planned for the athletic department's website, www.georgiadogs.com.
The most recent renovation to the Dan Magill Tennis Complex that was completed this month included a new grandstand with chair-back seating in the lower levels of Henry Feild Stadium, permanent concessions stands, restrooms and a new 1,750-square foot press box.
The Georgia men's team, ranked as high as No. 18 this year, will open its outdoor season on Monday, Feb. 24 against Florida Atlantic at 2:30 p.m. The Bulldogs are coached by Manuel Diaz, who has served as head coach since 1989 and was a former player and assistant under Magill. He has been a part of eight national championships (6-NCAA and 2-Indoor).
The Georgia women's team, ranked as high as No. 2 this season, has its first outdoor match on Feb. 29 versus Tennessee at noon. Jeff Wallace, now in his 35th year, directs the women's program, and they have won six national titles (2 NCAA, 4 Indoor). Like Diaz, he played for Magill at UGA. They have recorded more than 700 career victories and have continued to build on the Georgia Tennis tradition.
