FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Led by a 1-under 71 from Jenny Bae, the Georgia women's golf team posted a 10-over 298 in Tuesday's second round of the Blessings Collegiate Invitational presented by Tyson Foods. The Bulldogs are fifth on the 14-team, all-SEC leaderboard entering Wednesday's final round.
Bae played the back side of the Blessings layout at 3-under en route to her red number. Candice Mahe's 73 and a pair of 77s from Caterina Don and Isabella Holpfer rounded out Georgia's counting scores.
"Jenny played really well, Candice had a solid day and Isabella really battled back for us," head coach Josh Brewer said. "In this format, you see a little of everything. We had a lot of very good moments and a few shots we'd like to have back. A few loose swings hurt us."
Bae turned at 2-over after mixing a trio of bogeys at No. 3, No. 6 and No. 7 with a birdie at No. 5. She opened her second half with birdies at No. 10 and No. 11 to return to even on the day and then went birdie-bogey-birdie at Nos. 15-17.
For the second consecutive day, the Bulldogs played better early. Yesterday, Georgia teed off from No. 10 and turned at 2-over. Today, the Bulldogs began the day at No. 1 and covered their first nine holes at 3-over.
"I think we're adjusting to the format (of all five golfers playing together)," Brewer said. "It's a much longer day and it just tests your mental said of golf. That's something we can certainly challenge ourselves on tomorrow. We'd like to play 18 good holes of golf instead of just 12 or 13."
Individually, Bae ascended from 16 spots on the leaderboard. She is tied for eighth at 3-over 147, while Don is tied for 14th at 149, Mahe is tied for 24th at 150, Holpfer is tied for 42nd at 156 and Jo Hua Hung is tied for 48th at 157.
Arkansas is atop the team and individual leaderboards. Brooke Matthews' 11-under tally leads the Razorbacks, who are at even-par 576. LSU is second at 586, followed by South Carolina at 592, Ole Miss at 597 and the Bulldogs at 598. Florida is sixth at 599 and Auburn is seventh at 600.
"It's October, but it's basically an SEC Championship and we want to be at the top of the leaderboard," Brewer said. "Credit to Arkansas. They've played well, but take away the home course advantage and it would be a dog fight that we'd be in the thick off."
To assist with social distancing, each team's five golfers are playing together instead of traditional pairings with other schools. Tee times for Wednesday are still to be determined. Live scoring is available via golfstat.com. The final round will be televised live by the Golf Channel from 3:30-7:30 p.m. ET.
The Blessings Invitational also features a combined competition of each SEC school's women's and men's team. Tournament host Arkansas leads that field after shooting a combined 11-over, f14 shots ahead of LSU. Georgia is 10th at 47-over.
