Thompson, Bulldogs Improve At Blessings Invitational
October 06, 2020 | Men's Golf
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. --- Georgia's Davis Thompson surged toward the top 10 on Tuesday during the second round of the inaugural Blessings Collegiate Invitational presented by Tyson Foods.
Playing the Blessings Golf Club's par-72, 7.503-yard layout, Thompson signed for a 2-under 70. That moved the junior to 1-under 143 for the tournament and up from 19th to 11th individually -- just three shy of third, two out of fourth, and one away from ninth. Kentucky's Alex Goff held the 36-hole lead at 10-under 134 after carding a 7-under 65 Tuesday.
As a team, the Bulldogs fired a 7-over 295 for a 10-shot improvement from the first round. Georgia will enter Wednesday's final round in 12th at 24-over 600. Alabama holds the team lead at 3-under 573.
Sophomore Trent Phillips followed Thompson with an even-par 72 on Tuesday. Redshirt freshman Nicolas Cassidy added a 3-over 75 and senior Will Chandler checked in at 6-over 78. Sophomore Eli Scott had the Bulldogs' non-counting score of 7-over 79.
Cassidy moved to 6-over 150 for the tournament, followed by Phillips at 7-over 151, Scott at 13-over 157, and Chandler at 16-over 160.
"I was pleased to see some improvement today," Georgia coach Chris Haack said. "The sign of a veteran team is to make corrections, and I feel like we did that to some extent. Davis was pretty solid today. He's a leader for us both on and the course, and he did what he normally does. He was 4-under over his last 13 holes and was bogey free for the final nine, so I'm sure he'd like to carry that momentum into Wednesday."
The 54-hole event through Wednesday features each of the Southeastern Conference's women's and men's squads competing for team, program, and individual honors at Blessings Golf Club. A combined men's/women's winner will be determined Wednesday as the No. 1 players are paired together in a best ball format. Thompson and Catarina Don of the women's team stand fifth at 14-under, three in back of the Kentucky duo.
Live coverage of the tournament will air on GOLF Channel daily from 3:30-7:30 p.m. Results and tee times can be found at golfstat.com. Georgia will tee off at 10:32 a.m. on Wednesday. The five Bulldogs are competing in the same fivesome to help control social distancing.
The Blessings Collegiate Invitational is Georgia's first team competition since the 2019-20 season was cut short in March by the coronavirus pandemic.
The SEC announced that its golf programs may compete in up to three fall events beginning Oct. 1 against league teams or non-conference opponents from the school's geographic region. Georgia and the other men's teams are slated to play in the Legends Collegiate Invitational in Nashville, Tenn., Oct. 25-27 and in the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala., Nov. 9-10. Announcements about the spring portion of the season will be made at a later date.
