FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Georgia women's golf team fired a 12-over 300 in the opening round of the Blessing Collegiate Invitational on Monday, putting the Bulldogs in fourth place on the all-SEC leaderboard.
"We started, which is exciting in and of itself," head coach Josh Brewer said. "It's nice to get a baseline of where we are. We have a couple more days to put ourselves in position to win the golf tournament. You can shoot yourself out of it pretty quickly on this golf course. We battled and were near the top of the leaderboard most of the day and are excited to get back out here tomorrow."
Caterina Don paced Georgia with an even-par 72. The Bulldogs also counted a 75 from Jo Hua Hung, a 76 from Jenny Bae and a 77 from Candice Mahe.
"Caterina played solid," Brewer said. "I'm sure she feels like she left two or three shots out their. Heck, everyone on our team probably feels that way. To shoot even-par was a good round and a nice start for her season."
Arkansas grabbed the first-round lead by shooting 1-over 289. Rounding out the top-5 teams are LSU at 293, Florida at 295 and the Bulldogs and Auburn both at 300.
Overall, Don is tied for sixth, five shots behind the pace of co-leaders Brooke Matthews of Arkansas and Ingrid Lindblad of LSU. In addition, Hung is tied for 19th, Bae is tied for 24th, Mahe is tied for 32nd and Isabella Holpher, who shot 79, is tied for 44th.
The Bulldogs teed off from No. 10 and played the back side of the course first. After covering the first nine holes at 2-over, Georgia dropped nine strokes on the first four holes of the front side. The Bulldogs grabbed three of those back by playing No. 5 at 3-under. Holes No. 7 and No. 8 cost Georgia five strokes, but Bae regained one of those with a closing birdie at No. 9.
Don opened the season with a birdie but gave that stroke at No. 12. She turned at even following another birdie at No. 15 and a bogey at No. 17. After slipping to 2-over with bogeys at No. 2 and No. 3, an eagle on the 491-yard, par-5 No. 5 brought Don back to even.
To assist with social distancing, each team's five golfers are playing together instead of traditional pairings with other schools. On Tuesday, Georgia will tee off from No. 1 at 11:27 a.m. ET. Live scoring is available via golfstat.com.
"There are different ways to look at (where you tee off), but I don't think there's a big advantage on either side," Brewer said. "Today, No. 9 is a birdie hole but at the same time, No. 7 and No. 8 make you grit your teeth and hold on for dear life for about 30 minutes."
The Blessings Invitational, which is presented by Tyson Foods, also features a combined competition of each SEC school's women's and men's team. Tournament host Arkansas leads that field after shooting a combined 6-over, two shots clear of LSU and Tennessee. Georgia is ninth at 29-over.
