October 05, 2020 | Men's Golf
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. --- The Georgia men's golf team stands 13th after one round of the inaugural Blessings Collegiate Invitational presented by Tyson Foods.
Playing the Blessings Golf Club's par-72, 7.503-yard layout on Monday, the Bulldogs carded a 17-over 305. Tennessee snared the first-round lead at 8-under 280, followed by Kentucky and Texas A&M each at even-par 288.
Junior Davis Thompson paced the Bulldogs at 1-over 73 and he stands 19th individually. Thompson is five shots behind Hunter Wolcott of Tennessee (4-under 68).
Redshirt freshman Nicolas Cassidy followed Thompson at 3-over 75. Sophomore Eli Scott (who was making his Georgia debut after transferring from Coastal Georgia) signed for a 6-over 78, while sophomore Trent Phillips carded a 7-over 79. Senior Will Chandler had the Bulldogs' non-counting score of 10-over 82.
Monday's round took more than seven hours to complete and the Bulldogs left the course minutes before sunset. Portable lights were brought in on the 18th green to help teams wrap up the day.
"This was not the kind of start we were hoping for, but we're taking it as a learning experience," Georgia head coach Chris Haack said. "We had a hard time getting anything going today and finding some momentum. We know we have two rounds to go and plenty of time left, so we'll come out swinging on Tuesday. We're all excited to be playing collegiate golf again, so in our minds, everything is positive."
The 54-hole event through Wednesday features each of the Southeastern Conference's women's and men's squads competing for team, program, and individual honors at Blessings Golf Club. Live coverage of the tournament will air on GOLF Channel daily from 3:30-7:30 p.m. Results and tee times can be found at golfstat.com.
Georgia will tee off at 10:54 a.m. on Tuesday. The five Bulldogs are competing in the same fivesome to help control social distancing.
The Blessings Collegiate Invitational is Georgia's first team competition since the 2019-20 season was cut short in March by the coronavirus pandemic.
The SEC announced that its golf programs may compete in up to three fall events beginning Oct. 1 against league teams or non-conference opponents from the school's geographic region. Georgia and the other men's teams are slated to play in the Legends Collegiate Invitational in Nashville, Tenn., Oct. 25-27 and in the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala., Nov. 9-10. Announcements about the spring portion of the season will be made at a later date.
