A Late Goal Lifts Vanderbilt Over No. 15 Georgia

October 25, 2020 | Soccer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- A late second half goal was the difference as the No. 15 University of Georgia soccer team fell, 1-0, to the Vanderbilt Commodores on Sunday evening.

After a hard-fought 88 minutes of play, the Commodores were able to get the ball past the Bulldogs off a shot from within the 18-yard box.

Despite the goal, junior goalkeeper Emory Wegener had a strong match and stayed composed against Vanderbilt.  She had five saves and made crucial game-saving plays throughout the 90 minutes to keep the Bulldogs in the game.

"It was a very good matchup of two SEC teams," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "We battled for the full 90 minutes. They had a moment of quality there late in the second half and were able to apply the finishing touches. We didn't take the same care of the ball in the final third and did not create the same opportunities. When we did, we did not capitalize on those.  That's just the way goes sometimes in high level games. Vanderbilt is a really good team.  We matched them on the day and played very well. I did applaud the way we approached the game and how hard we played, but we are a very disappointed team right now."

Georgia (2-2-2) had a very busy first half on the defensive side.  The backline was steady, keeping Vanderbilt (3-3-0) to only three shots. Both junior Abby Boyan and senior Ashley Andersen would add two tallies in the shots category, but would not finish.

Boyan fought back early in the second half, adding two more shots for the Bulldogs, but the Vanderbilt defense held her from capitalizing on her opportunities.

With two minutes remaining in the second half, the Commodores would take advantage of a cross within the box. The point-blank shot would secure their third win of the season.

The Bulldogs will hit the road next weekend one last time as they travel to Oxford, Miss., to face off against the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 7:00p.m. ET.
