WEST POINT, Miss. — Paced by a pair of 4-under 68s from Jenny Bae and Caterina Don, the Georgia women's golf team posted a 3-under 285 in Tuesday's second round of The Ally. The Bulldogs are in eighth place overall entering Wednesday's final round at the Old Waverly Golf Club.
The Bulldogs' blistered their final four holes of the day, covering that stretch at 8-under as a team.
"We finished today like we're truly capable of finishing every day," head coach Josh Brewer said. "Hopefully, we'll take advantage of that momentum and carry it into tomorrow as well. Jenny and Caterina played really well all day. To have two players shoot 4-under is obviously going to help your score, but Jo (Hua Hung) finishing her round by going birdie-eagle on was massive for the team. That really put us where we could have a much better finish tomorrow."
The under-par round was Georgia's first as a team in five rounds this season and also was the Bulldogs' lowest effort since shooting 7-under in the final round of The Gold Rush in February.
In addition to the rounds of Bae and Don, Georgia also counted a 74 from Hung and a 75 from Candice Mahe.
The Bulldogs teed off from No. 10 and played the back half of the course first on Tuesday. Georgia turned at 1-under but then dropped six shots on the first five holes of the front side before catching fire late.
"I think we stayed patient today," Brewer said. "We capitalized and made birdies when we had the chance. Yesterday, we forced it. Today, we kept playing and knew we'd get our chances because we're good enough to make a lot of birdies on this course. It's funny, when one or two golfers start making birdies, even though it's team golf and you're spread out, it seems that everyone on the team starts to make them."
Bae's lone bogey of the day came at No. 12. She birdied No. 16 and No. 18 to turn at 1-under and then added additional birdies at No. 2, No. 8 and No. 9. Bae's 68 represented her career-low loop at Georgia, besting a 2-under 69 as a freshman in the second round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.
Don also turned at 1-under, mixing six pars with a birdies at No. 12 and No. 18 and a bogey at No. 14. She was 1-under through 13 holes after going birdie-bogey at No. 3 and No. 4 but wrapped up her loop with a trio of birdies on her final four holes.
Overall, Bae is tied for fifth at 4-under 140, four shots off the pace of Tennessee's Mikayla Bardwell on the individual leaderboard. In addition, Don is tied for ninth at 2-under 142, Mahe is tied for 51st at 151, Hung is tied for 53rd at 152 and Céleste Dao is tied for 64th at 156.
South Carolina leads the team field at 568. Rounding out the top-10 teams are Tennessee at 570, LSU at 572, Ole Miss at 575, Auburn at 577, Alabama at 579, Florida at 581, the Bulldogs at 582, Arkansas at 583 and Vanderbilt at 586.
Georgia will be paired with Florida and Arkansas on Wednesday. The shotgun start will feature the Bulldogs, Gators and Razorbacks teeing off on holes Nos. 9-11 at 9:30 a.m. ET. Live scoring is updated on a hole-by-hole basis at golfstat.com.
