Georgia Scores a 196.300 at the Metroplex Challenge
January 25, 2020 | Gymnastics
FORT WORTH, Texas --- The University of Georgia gymnastics team posted its second-highest score of the season with a 196.300 at the Metroplex Challenge on Saturday night.
Â
The GymDogs finished behind No. 1 Oklahoma (197.525), No. 5 Alabama (196.575), and No. 4 Denver (196.575).Â
Â
"Today did not go our way, but there were a lot of positive notes," Georgia head coach Courtney Kupets Carter said. "It was hard for us to build momentum as a team because we would have a good routine and then a few mistakes and that becomes difficult. We started on beam and that was a tough environment, but it was a good experience and we did not have any falls. There were so many fun and exciting moves forward, and progress, and we also had a lot of mistakes that are fixable. Overall, it was frustrating, but we have so much further to go. The team worked together and held their energy."
Â
The GymDogs began competition on beam, posting a 49.025. Senior Sabrina Vega and junior Marissa Oakley led the squad, both scoring a 9.825 for their routines. Sophomore Mikayla Magee and freshman Haley De Jong followed with 9.800s.Â
Â
Georgia posted a 49.100 in the second rotation on floor. Vega scored a 9.875 and Lukacs posted a 9.825. Magee and Rachel Baumann scored two 9.800s before Amanda Cashman made her floor debut with another 9.800 for the GymDogs.Â
Â
The GymDogs added a 48.950 on vault. Lukacs led the squad with a 9.850 in the anchor position.
Â
Georgia finished strong on bars, scoring a 49.225. Lukacs and Cashman scored consecutive 9.850s, before Loulie Hattaway contributed a 9.800. Megan Roberts added another 9.850 for the GymDogs and Haley De Jong led the squad with a 9.875.Â
Â
Georgia returns to Stegeman Coliseum on Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 2) for a 4 p.m. meet against Auburn.Â
