January 10, 2020 | Swimming & Diving

ATHENS, Ga. – University of Georgia swimming and diving opens its home schedule with a ranked Southeastern Conference showdown this Saturday against Texas A&M at Gabrielsen Natatorium. The meet will be aired live on SEC Network + beginning at 10 a.m. EST, while admission is free for all fans. Live results will also be available on GeorgiaDogs.com and to subscribers on the MeetMobile app.

Saturday's meet is the third all-time men's meeting between the Bulldogs and Aggies, with Georgia sweeping both previous matchups. For the Lady Bulldogs, it is the fourth meeting, with Georgia holding a 2-0-1 advantage. In the most recent collision on Jan. 8, 2016, the Bulldogs prevailed 178-122, while the Lady Bulldogs took a 163.5-136.5 result.

This weekend marks the first competition for the full Georgia squad since their terrific performance at the Tennessee Invitational on Nov. 21-23. The No. 11 men's squad (3-1) took first overall against a crowded field, thanks to strong performances in freestyle distance races and two victories on the springboard from junior Zach Allen.

Junior Camden Murphy posted the fourth-best time nationally (45.36) in his win in the 100 butterfly, while senior Clayton Forde also stands fourth nationally (1:45.04) with his win in the 400 IM. Fellow seniors Walker Higgins (500 freestyle) and Kevin Miller (mile) also currently hold places in the national top 10.

The eighth-ranked Lady Bulldogs (3-1) finished second in Knoxville, but made multiple moves in the program record books. Freshman Zoie Hartman broke a 21-year record in the 100 breaststroke with an auto-qualifying time of 58.27, the nation's fastest time this season. Hartman also reached Georgia's top five in both the 200 breaststroke (2:07.43) and 200 IM (1:53.69), ranking second and third respectively in the national standings.

Sophomore Dakota Luther set a new personal best with a win in the 100 butterfly and her 200 butterfly win places her second nationally. Also ranking in the top 10 nationally are junior Courtney Harnish, sitting at third in the 200 butterfly and fourth in the 500 freestyle, senior Veronica Burchill at seventh in the 100 freestyle, and junior Olivia Anderson at seventh in the mile. Hartman, Luther and Burchill also combined to post an A-cut time of 3:30.98 in the 400 medley relay.

Texas A&M's men's squad (5-2) enters this weekend led by sophomore Shaine Casas, who has established himself as one of the nation's top performers. Casas ranks first nationally in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM, second in the 200 backstroke, and third in the 100 fly, with A-cuts in the first three events. Junior teammate Mark Theall stands third in the 500 freestyle and fifth in the 100 free, while freshman Andres Puente earned a A-cut in the 200 breaststroke. At the well, freshman Victor Povzner has twice earned SEC Male Diver of the Week honors. In their last outing, the Aggies took double-dual victories over Incarnate Word and Trinity (Texas). In terms of common opponents, the Aggies fell, 163-137, to No. 25 Duke on Nov. 9, who Georgia defeated, 170-130, on Oct. 26.

The four-time defending SEC champion Aggie women (3-1) are highlighted by senior Anna Belousova, who ranks sixth nationally in the 200 breaststroke, and junior Taylor Pike, who sits seventh in the 200 butterfly. Belousova won the SEC championship in the 200 last season and earned First Team All-American honors, as did junior Jing Wen Quah in the 200 butterfly.

Following Saturday's meet, the Bulldogs will set their sights toward a matchup against Tennessee on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Gabrielsen Natatorium. The meet is set for 11 a.m. and will be broadcast on SEC Network +.
