Henning Pushes No. 2-Ranked Sigsgaard to Third Set on Final Day

ATHENS, Ga. – University of Georgia men's tennis sophomore Philip Henning competed in the red singles draw finals of the 52nd Southern Intercollegiate Championships to wrap up competition Sunday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Henning pushed the nation's No. 2-ranked singles player Christian Sigsgaard (Texas) to a 6-4 loss in the first set. Despite his efforts, the sophomore Bulldog then fell in the next two sets and was eventually defeated, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
"I was extremely proud of the guys and in their performances," Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz said. "The most encouraging thing was to see our young guys out there competing, tired, and in a hot environment. Yesterday, we didn't do as well as we could've done. I was disappointed, not in their efforts, but in our record. Today, we really stepped it up, and every single one of our guys competed greatly."
In the silver singles consolation finals, freshman Erik Grevelius defeated Miami's Franco Aubone in straight sets for the 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Earlier in doubles, the Bulldogs recorded two wins against Florida opponents. The sophomore duo of Henning and Blake Croyder raced to a 6-1 win against Gators No. 3 overall seed Johannes Ingildsen and Brian Berdusco, while freshmen Grevelius and Mateo Reyes performed to a 6-0 victory over Miami's William Grattan-Smith and Stephen Madonia.
The Bulldogs finished the day with consolation singles matches with wins from Sam Dromsky, Reyes and Croyder.
All in all, 192 matches were played among the 12 teams during the three-day tournament.
