SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Members of the Georgia men's tennis wrapped up competition at the 2019 Battle in the Bay Classic on Sunday. Sophomore Blake Croyder capped off the tournament by winning the qualifying consolation bracket.
The Marietta native defeated Michigan's Patrick Maloney in a competitive, three-set final match. Croyder regrouped from a first set loss 5-7 to win a second-set tiebreaker 7-3 and rally back in the match. He won 10-6 in a third set super-tiebreaker to clinch the bracket.
"Blake was down a set and 5-0 in his match today. His back was against the wall, but he never gave up and kept believing in himself," volunteer coach Bryce Warren said. "I'm really proud of him for this comeback. He showed what it means to be a Bulldog out on the court today."
Croyder advanced to the singles qualifying consolation finals on Saturday with a 6-3, 6-3 win over David Woodland of the University of San Francisco.
Freshman Baptiste Anselmo, who reached the quarterfinals of the doubles draw with senior Robert Loeb, dropped a 7-6(2), 6-3 decision to Nitzan Ricklis (San Francisco) in an extra singles match.
This weekend, the Bulldogs play host to the Southern Intercollegiates in Athens on Friday, Sept. 27 through Sunday, Sept. 29. With the Dan Magill Tennis Complex undergoing a new $8.5 million renovation, stay tuned for match locations and tournament details.
