Bulldogs Notch Wins As Fall Tournament Season Begins

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO-----Five Bulldogs notched singles wins and all three duos registered a doubles victory Friday in the opening round of the Puerto Rico Fall Classic.

Katarina Jokic, Marta Gonzalez, Lea Ma and Morgan Coppoc opened their fall season with a straight set win while Vivian Wolff was extended to three sets before pulling out a victory. Wolff led the Bulldogs last season in singles wins, going 32-3. With Friday's latest victory over senior Sydney Riley (Clemson), Wolff has won 21 consecutive matches.

Ma, a freshman from Dix Hills, N.Y., cruised in her collegiate debut, posting a 6-0,6-0 decision over Clemson junior Laura Marti. Bulldog sophomore Alee Clayton dropped a tight contest against Wake Forest freshman Anna Campana 7-6(6),6-4.

In doubles, Jokic and Wolff dispatched the Wake Forest tandem of Chandler Carter and Carolyn Campana 8-0. Coppoc and Lea teamed up to defeat Peyton Pesavento and Alexis Franco (Wake Forest) 8-2. Clayton and Gonzalez edged the Wake Forest pair of Anna Brylin and Maddie Lynch 8-7(4).

"We've been practicing and playing against each other so today was nice to get out on the court and play somebody else," said Georgia coach Jeff Wallace. "It was a good first day with plenty more matches scheduled here the next couple of days."

The Bulldogs will play a series of singles and doubles matches through Sunday against student-athletes from Clemson, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest. The matches will count for the individual records but no team score will be kept.
