Georgia Falls to Virginia Tech, 2-0
August 30, 2019 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. --- Despite taking more shots on goal, the University of Georgia soccer team fell to Virginia Tech, 2-0, in front of a near-capacity crowd at the Turner Soccer Complex on Friday night.Â
Â
The Hokies (3-0) struck first with a goal in the 35th minute of play and took a two-goal lead after capitalizing on a free kick opportunity with 12 seconds left in the first half.Â
Â
"That was a tough goal to give up right before halftime," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "We wanted a positive response in the second half. It's hard to chase a game when it's a two-goal difference opposed to a one-goal difference. I thought we got the response we wanted from an exertion and physical standpoint, but we weren't able to get the execution we needed. I did think our execution was at a higher level and there was a bit of urgency in our play. That urgency now becomes our standard heading into our game with Maryland on Sunday."
Â
Junior forward Reagan Glisson had two free kick opportunities saved by the Virginia Tech goalkeeper in the first 45 minutes of action.Â
Â
Georgia (1-2) took 10 total shots, with five on target, compared to the Hokies' seven. The Hokies and Bulldogs committed 10 and 11 fouls, respectively.Â
Â
The Bulldog Classic continues on Sunday when Georgia takes on Maryland at noon. Auburn and Virginia Tech face off at 2:30 to conclude the weekend's slate at the Turner Soccer Complex.Â
Â
Earlier this evening, Auburn defeated Maryland, 4-0.Â
