Bulldogs Attack Strong in 5-0 Win Over Maryland
September 01, 2019 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. --- The University of Georgia soccer team took control over Maryland in an astonishing 5-0 win at the Turner Soccer Complex on Sunday.Â
Â
Juniors Reagan Glisson and Delaney Erwin, sophomore Abby Boyan, and freshman Chloe Chapman contributed goals for the Bulldogs. Chapman, who is also a member of the Georgia women's basketball team, notched the final two goals of the game.
Â
"We chased the game and worked really hard in the second half of our game on Friday against Virginia Tech and just didn't get anything out of it," head coach Billy Lesesne said. "I thought our challenge was to have the same energy that we had in the second half but just be more clinical and keep the ball a little bit better. We knew it was going to be hot. I thought we did a good job of that in the first half, but we didn't get the end product that we wanted in the first half. In the second half, as Maryland's legs started to tire, I thought we did a really nice job. I've always talked about the depth of this team- that we're not a bunch of super stars, but we have great depth. I think we showed that on a hot day today. We've made progress. Today, we kept the intensity up, our communication was better, and I thought our decision-making was better."
Â
The Bulldogs scored in the 26th minute on the second of back-to-back corner kick opportunities. Glisson took the shot from the far right corner and sailed the ball high into the net for the score.
Â
After halftime, Boyan gave the Bulldogs a cushion with the second goal of the game in the 56th minute and Erwin added to the lead two minutes later, firing a shot from outside the box. Sophomore Dani Murguia assisted both goals.Â
Â
Then with 10 minutes left in the game, Chapman booted the ball to the back of the net for her first score as a Bulldog. She followed that up with a header to score the fifth goal of the day at the 83-minute mark.Â
Â
"I think when other teams are scouting us, and they see a lot of different players with goals and assists, it makes it difficult to really focus in on one player," Lesesne continued. "We've been intentional about sharing the ball, and I think it really showed today."
Â
Maryland had a few good opportunities to score late in the game, but sophomore goalkeeper Emory Wegener and the Georgia defense maintained a clean sheet.
Â
Up next, the Bulldogs head to Nashville to face the Belmont Bruins on Thursday, September 5 at 7:30 p.m. and will have another road contest at Clemson on Sunday, September 8 at 6 p.m.
