Bulldogs Dominate Bearcats in Home Opener, 4-0
August 25, 2019 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. --- Goals from four different Bulldogs lead the University of Georgia soccer team to victory over the Binghamton Bearcats, 4-0, in the home opener on Sunday at the Turner Soccer Complex.Â
Â
Juniors Delaney Erwin and Reagan Glisson, sophomore Dani Murguia, and freshman Macie Witter scored goals for the Bulldogs, and junior goalkeeper Liz Brucia earned her first shutout.
Â
This is the most goals scored in a game since August 26, 2018, when Georgia defeated Charlotte, 5-1.Â
Â
"This was a great team win for us," head coach Billy Lesesne said. "I thought we had a lot of possession in the first half against Purdue, but we didn't capitalize. Today, we had a lot of possession and we did a better job capitalizing on that. We really shared the ball well in the second half, and I think it showed with multiple players getting on the scoreboard. I was pleased with our movement off the ball, and our final third approach."
Â
Erwin came off the bench and scored Georgia's first goal of the season with an assist from Murguia in the 26th minute. The Bulldogs carried the 1-0 lead into the locker room at half time.Â
Â
"I think Delaney's goal was big for us just to see the ball hit the back of the net," Lesesne continued. "We've struggled with finding the frame, and she put that away, which gave us confidence, and we really grew in our confidence from that point."
Â
"The early goal added a nice little burst of energy, which was what we needed," Erwin said following the game. "This was a great way for us to respond to adversity and bounce back. It was a really great team win today."
Â
Georgia continued on the attack in the second half, scoring three more goals.
Â
Senior Keely Cartrett passed the ball to Murguia for the Bulldogs' second goal at the 61-minute mark, before junior Glisson added to the lead with a shot from outside the box.Â
Â
In her first game as a Bulldog, Witter sealed the victory with one more goal at the 83-minute mark.  Â
Â
Georgia controlled possession for most of the game. The defense held Binghamton to one shot and kept the Bearcats out of the final third.Â
Â
The Bulldogs took 21 total shots with 11 on target.Â
Â
The Bulldogs return to action next week as they host the Bulldog Classic, featuring Auburn, Maryland, and Virginia Tech. Georgia will face Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 31 and Maryland at 12 p.m. on Sunday, September 1.Â
