EAST LANSING, Mich. — Freshman Jo Hua Hung fired a 1-under 71 to pace the Georgia women's golf team in the final round of the NCAA East Lansing Regional on Wednesday. The Bulldogs wrapped up play in 12th on the team leaderboard.
Georgia covered the Forest Akers West Golf Course layout in 298 strokes on Wednesday, also counting a 74 from freshman Jenny Bae, a 75 from freshman Harmie Constantino and a 78 from junior Gabriela Coello.
"It's always bittersweet to end the season," head coach Josh Brewer said. "The one thing that this group has done throughout the entire spring is battled every day and given me and the University of Georgia every ounce of determination. We had some positives at the end of the day. Jenny birdied her last hole, and Jo birdied three of her last six holes. Harmie gave us a great round yesterday. This week didn't finish like we wanted, but this team has set a good foundation for future years.
"Unfortunately, it's who we've been most of the season," Brewer added. "We've gotten two or three solid scores but have had a tough time getting that fourth or fifth score. This time of year, you need to play your best because you're competing against the best. This group has given me all I can ask of them."
On the individual leaderboard, Constantino and Hung tied for 33rd at 7-over 223, Bae tied for 56th at 229, Coello tied for 61st at 230 and senior Rinko Mitsunaga tied for 82nd at 237.
The top-six teams from the Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, which begin next Friday in Fayetteville, Ark. No. 12 Kent State won the East Lansing Regional by a shot over No. 5 Arizona. Also advancing were No. 14 UCLA, No. 4 Stanford, Illinois and Indiana. No. 20 Michigan State, the tournament's host, finished just on the other side of the cut by three shots.
UCLA's Parry Tavatanakit secured medalist honors after finishing at 8-under 208. The three individuals who earned spots in the NCAA Championships field were Haylin Harris and Allyson Geer-Park of Michigan State and Mikayla Fitzpatrick from Xavier.
Mitsunaga was the lone senior on the Georgia roster. The Bulldogs will return five letterwinners next season – Bae, Coello, Constantino, Hung and Kelsey Kurnett.
In addition, the Bulldogs will welcome a trio of highly touted freshmen including Celeste Dao, who earlier this week qualified for her second-straight U.S. Women's Open; Caterina Don, who finished 12th at the inaugural Augusta National Women's Amateur last month; and Caroline Craig, who was the 2017 Georgia State Golf Association Girls Junior of the Year.
