Georgia Defeats Drake 7-4, Secures Spot in Regional Final

May 20, 2019 | Softball

MINNEAPOLIS – Following a 36-hour weather delay, Georgia softball resumed its game against Drake Monday morning, holding on and defeating Drake 7-4.

Game 5 of the Minneapolis Regional was sent into a delay Saturday during the fifth inning and resumed Monday with Georgia (42-18) leading 4-2.

At the plate, Alyssa DiCarlo and Alysen Febrey each had two hits with a home run apiece, each driving in a pair of runs.

In the circle, Lauren Mathis pitched two innings in her start. Alley Cutting (11-4) earned the win in relief, working five complete innings, striking out seven.

Georgia jumped out to an early lead in the opening frame on a two-run home run off the bat of Febrey, 2-0 Bulldogs.

Drake (43-16) wasted no time responding in the bottom half of the inning. Back-to-back singles and a one-out walk loaded the bases. Back-to-back RBI singles plated the early tying runs to knot the game at 2-2 after one inning.

With runners on the corners, Jessica Morgan threaded a base hit through the left side to drive in DiCarlo and retake a one-run lead in the top of the third, 3-2.

DiCarlo capitalized on a runners-on-the-corners situation with two out in the fourth, dropping a single into center, driving in Savana Sikes and lengthening the lead to two, 4-2.

The game was sent into a weather delay at 10:06 p.m., local time, Saturday and was resumed at 10:05 a.m. Monday in the fifth inning.

Immediately after resumption, with runners in scoring position, a sacrifice fly to right by Tyler Armistead allowed pinch runner CJ Landrum to tag and score. A two-out error by the shortstop allowed Sikes to touch home and widen the lead to 6-2 in favor of Georgia.

DiCarlo's 23rdhome run of the season lengthened the Georgia lead to five in the top of the sixth, 7-2.

Drake didn't go down without a fight in the seventh as the Bulldogs plated two runs on a double off the bat of Taryn Pena, cutting the Georgia lead to 7-4. Cutting worked the final out to secure a spot in the Regional Final.

Georgia takes on #7 Minnesota at 1 p.m., ET, on ESPNU.
