Bulldogs To Open SEC Match Play Against Aggies

April 26, 2019 | Men's Golf

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. --- Georgia will take on Texas A&M on Saturday to open the match play portion of the Southeastern Conference Championship at Sea Island Golf Club.

On the Seaside Course's par-70, 7,005-yard layout, the Bulldogs landed in a tie for fifth following the 54 holes of stroke play and wound up seeded sixth for match play following the tiebreakers. Georgia and Texas A&M are slated to tee off between 8:20 and 9 a.m. on the 10th hole.

The Bulldogs will have freshman Trent Phillips against Sam Bennett, junior Trevor Phillips against Walker Lee, sophomore Davis Thompson against Chandler Phillips, freshman Will Kahlstorf against Brandon Smith, and junior Spencer Ralston against Dan Erickson.

"Our No. 1 goal was to get to match play, and we accomplished that," Georgia head coach Chris Haack said. "We have seen Texas A&M several times in tournaments this year. They're good top to bottom and we'll have to play well to beat them. With match play, you have to keep your head in the game, you have to look for your openings, and you have to take advantage of them."

The other quarterfinal matches will be No.1 Auburn against No. 8 South Carolina, No. 2 Vanderbilt against No. 7 Arkansas, and No. 4 Kentucky against No. 5 Tennessee. The semifinals will take place Saturday afternoon, with SEC Network + providing digital coverage from 4:30-7 p.m. The championship match on Sunday will be televised live on the SEC Network at 7:30 a.m.

The Bulldogs ended stroke play at 6-over 846 after recording a final-round 15-over 295. Auburn snared the top spot at 24-under 816 and was followed by Vanderbilt's 8-under 232 as they were the only squads to wind up under par. Texas A&M, Georgia's quarterfinals opponent, finished at 3-over 843.

Thompson paced the Bulldogs on Friday as he signed for a 2-under 68. Trevor Phillips added a 1-over 71, followed by Ralston and Kahlstorf each at 8-over 78. Trent Phillips had the Bulldogs' non-counting score of 15-over 85.

Thompson placed fourth at 5-under 205, three shy of medalist Jovan Rebula of Auburn. Trevor Phillips came in 15th at even-par 210, followed by Ralston at 5-over 215, Trent Phillips at 13-over 223, and Kahlstorf at 17-over 227.
