Georgia Falls to Tennessee in SEC Quarterfinals
April 19, 2019 | Men's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A rain-soaked day turned into a tough outing for the Georgia men's tennis team on Friday as the Bulldogs fell to Tennessee, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the Southeastern Conference Tournament.
After several hours of rain in the area, officials worked to dry the outdoor courts, but their work was in vain. As soon as the coin flip began, the match was forced inside due to another line of thunderstorms.
Tennessee won at courts one and three in doubles and at the top three singles spots to take the win. With the loss, Georgia falls to 13-10 and awaits the NCAA tournament selection show on Monday, April 29 at 6 p.m. ET.
"It was a disappointing finish today," head coach Manuel Diaz said. "We just did not play with the energy we needed, and Tennessee played a really outstanding match. It was not the best situation for us having to go indoors, but that is no excuse. They just outplayed us at every position. We will regroup and prepare for the NCAA tournament."
A pair of 6-3 losses at courts one and three doomed the Bulldogs in doubles. Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski fell to the 10th-ranked Tennessee combo of Timo Stodder and Preston Touliatos, before Alex Diaz and Philip Henning lost to Scott Jones and Adam Walton.
Down 1-0 and with only three indoor courts available, the top three positions went on court first. Tennessee was dominant at each position, taking straight-set wins at all three courts to win the contest, 4-0.
