TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Despite scattering more hits than its opponent, the 13th-ranked University of Georgia softball team was shut out by #5 Alabama Sunday evening, 4-0.
Senior Alyssa DiCarlo and junior Ciara Bryan each recorded two hits for the Bulldogs (30-13, 5-9). Georgia out-hit the Tide 5-4 in its first shutout loss the season.
In the circle, Alley Cutting (7-4) went the distance, pitching six innings, allowing two earned runs.
With a runner on first and one out, back-to-back Bulldog errors by the left side of the infield allowed an Alabama (41-4, 10-4) run to touch home in the first inning, 1-0. An RBI single by Merris Schroder lengthened the Tide lead in the third to two, 2-0.
A two-run home run by Schroder in the fifth widened the lead to 4-0 for Alabama. Prior to the home run, Bryan robbed a would-be home run in centerfield for the first out of the inning.
The Bulldogs went down quietly in the sixth and seventh innings to drop the series.
Georgia and Alabama will wrap up the series Monday evening. First pitch is schedule for 7 p.m., EDT, on SEC Network.
