Bulldogs Suffer 5-2 Loss to Kentucky
April 12, 2019 | Men's Tennis
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The No. 17-ranked University of Georgia men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 43 Kentucky Friday night at the Boone Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs fall to 11-9 overall and 6-5 in the SEC, while Kentucky improves its overall record to 15-12 and 5-6 in the SEC.
"Kentucky played great doubles today in taking the lead," Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz said. "I thought we answered the challenge by taking five first sets in singles, but we struggled finishing today, going 0-3 in third set matches. We have to be tougher, and Sunday will be a character match for us."
In doubles, Georgia's freshman duo of Trent Bryde and Philip Henning was the only team to pull out a win, taking down Kentucky's pair of Ryo Matsumura and Kevin Huempfner, 6-3. Though the Bulldogs managed to make comebacks on the first and second courts, the Wildcats held on at both.
At the No. 1 spot, Zielinski and junior Robert Loeb battled back to tie it at 5-all with Wildcat opponents Cesar Bourgois and Kento Yamada, but the Georgia tandem eventually fell, 7-5. A 6-4 loss for Duncan and Reinberg at the No. 2 spot followed, allowing Kentucky to claim the doubles point.
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles action, the Bulldogs stormed back to claim five first-set wins. Georgia's Duncan and Henning gained momentum early on in their respective matches to claim the Bulldogs' only two points.
First, freshman Henning played to a quick 6-2, 6-2 win on court six against Parth Aggarwal to put Georgia on the board and tie it, 1-all. At the No. 5 spot, Duncan then snagged Georgia's first lead of the day (2-1), defeating the Wildcat's Huempfner by a score of 6-2, 7-5.
However, the Wildcats recaptured their early momentum, winning at the No. 3 spot while clinching all three third-set victories on courts one, two and four for the 5-2 win.
Next, the Bulldogs cap regular-season play on the road against the Vanderbilt Commodores on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
