Â
AUBURN, Ala.— The seventh-ranked University of Georgia equestrian team closed out regular season competition falling to No. 1 Auburn University, 17-3, on Friday evening at the Auburn University Equestrian Center.
Â
"I am really proud of the spirit, enthusiasm, and fight these dogs had today," Georgia head coach Meghan Boenig said. "However, that was not reflected in this win-loss score and that's unfortunate. We want it so badly for them all. Auburn is a very, very competitive team and we should leave here with our chins held high because we fought in a lot of great places."
Â
Auburn (13-0, 6-0 SEC) took an early lead over the Bulldogs claiming Horsemanship, 4-1. Freshman Sara Lewis defeated her opponent 72.5-69 earning a point for the Bulldogs. This win marks the freshman's third victory of her career.
Â
The Tigers outscored the Bulldogs, 4-1, in Equitation on the Flat. Junior Maddy Darst won the lone point for the Bulldogs outriding her opponent by a five-point margin, 76-69.
Â
Georgia (4-6, 3-3 SEC) trailed Auburn, 8-2, after the completion of Equitation on the Flat and Horsemanship.
Â
The Tigers returned in Equitation Over Fences, besting Georgia 4-1. Darst contributed her second Bulldog point, riding to an 81 over Hayley Iannotti's 78.
Â
Auburn continued in Reining, sweeping the event 5-0. The event was highlighted by Auburn's Betsy Brown receiving Most Outstanding Performance honors, with an event-high score of 72.5 to secure an 17-3 final for the Tigers.
Â
Up next, the Bulldogs will travel to College Station, Texas, for the SEC Championship hosted by the Texas A&M Aggies from March 29-30. The NCEA National Championships will take place April 17-20 in Waco, Texas.
