Stolen Base Record Headlines #9 Georgia’s 11-3 Win over Alabama State
March 05, 2019 | Baseball
ATHENS, Ga. – A Georgia baseball program record 10 stolen bases highlighted the ninth-ranked Bulldogs' 11-3 victory over Alabama State Tuesday evening at Foley Field.
Freshman left fielder Randon Jernigan broke the previous record with the team's ninth stolen base in the sixth, but junior centerfielder Tucker Maxwell who was at the plate singled and enhanced the new record to 10. Fittingly, Maxwell's swipe also was significant as it marked his fourth of the game, which tied Rodney Bellamy with the most-ever by a Bulldog in one game (4-4-1980).
Aside from the historical milestones, Georgia (10-2) also prospered off a career-best start from junior Tim Elliott and career-best plate performances from Jernigan and fellow freshman Shane Marshall.
Elliott, a right-hander from Loganville, Ga., tossed six innings of one-run ball, yielding three hits and striking out seven batters, which matched his career-best, to improve to 1-1 on the season.
Jernigan, a right fielder from Brunswick, Ga., finished with his first-career four hit game (4-6, 2B, R, RBI), while Marshall, a catcher out of Naples, Fla., reached base all four times up (2-2, HR, 2B, 2 BB, 2 RBI, 3 R) and smacked his first-career home run.
For the sixth time this season, Georgia scored in the first inning. Sophomore right fielder Riley King drew a walk and stole second to set up a two-out RBI single from LJ Talley, giving Georgia the 1-0 lead.
An inning later, Marshall hit his solo shot over the left-field fence. Later in the inning with two outs, junior third baseman Aaron Schunk hit a ball to the shortstop whose wide throw pulled the first baseman off the bag, allowing Maxwell to score from third and King to come around from second to make it a 4-0 Georgia advantage.
Both teams traded one-run innings in the third with the Bulldogs' Marshall crossing the plate again – this time on a wild pitch.
The Bulldogs continued to pile it on in the fourth. First, Marshall drew a bases-loaded walk and then Jernigan beat out an infield single to plate another run.
In the sixth, Maxwell plated Marshall, while junior shortstop Cam Shepherd singled in Jernigan and Maxwell. Lastly, graduate transfer designated hitter John Cable rounded out the inning and Georgia's scoring by singling in Shepherd. Cable (3-4, RBI, 2 BB) finished with his best game to date in a Georgia uniform.

- Georgia moves to 5-1 when leading after the first inning.
- With Shane Marshall's home run, 10 different Georgia players have gone yard this season through 12 games. This number leads the SEC with the next team entering tonight having seven players with at least one home run.

On the lineup...
"We have been talking about how we have to get more production out of the back end of the lineup. The top four guys have been really consistent, really good for us, but the backend of the lineup has had some ups and downs. It was good to see those guys; Shane Marshall, Randon Jernigan, John Cable, and Tucker Maxwell, get some hits and some RBIs."
On Tim Elliott...
"Tim was really good and we needed that. We needed our bullpen to rest tonight and that's what he did for us tonight. He played a strong six innings, had seven strikeouts and one walk. I think he threw the ball really well tonight, when it's cold like it is tonight it's tough to pitch. I think he fought through the cold and preformed really well tonight."
On the amount of stolen bases...
"We talked about it in our pregame meeting. We wanted to try to steal some bases and put pressure on them. We knew we could make a run on the pitching staff and we started from the get go in the first inning when we stole a base right there. We really felt like we needed to put pressure on them because offensively honestly we weren't really great. We left 19 runners on base and we just need to score more runs in situations like that. That just has to get better and that's my challenge to the hitters. We just have to get better when the bases are loaded."
Player's Perspective
Junior RHP Tim Elliott
On how he felt on the mound…
"I felt good. You know everyday I try to go out there and I try to be the best version of myself everyday and do the best I can for my team. They picked me up today."
On the team's pitching depth…
"You can see definitely we have the offenses back. We're going to have a lot of close games this year. The pitching staff is definitely going to pick us up. It's good knowing the guy coming in behind you is going to get the job done."
Freshman C Shane Marshall
On catching [Tim] Elliott when he's having a good day…
"From what I heard, last year he had all these games just like this. He just battles on the mound. His change up is always working; his slider is working, which makes everything work. He hits his spots, he just competes. Sometimes he just doesn't get his way but today he got his way and he needed that win."
On first homerun…
"It felt great. I've been waiting on that one. Everybody has been giving me flack for that. It finally felt good to get it [homerun] and get it off my chest."
Junior CF Tucker Maxwell
On the stolen bases, the record and what it means…
"Anytime I get on, I usually have the green light. I did not know I had the record until Mr. Lakos [UGA SID, Christopher Lakos] told me just now. I don't think the team record means too much, because you'd rather win."
On the bottom half of the order production…
"It's big because the top half has been producing all season long, and the bottom half has been struggling a little bit, and we've been challenged to step up and help out. It's nice to finally see that production."
