SB: #8 Georgia Falls in Series Finale, 8-7

March 17, 2019 | Softball

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Eighth-ranked Georgia softball dropped a one-run game in the series finale at Missouri Sunday at Mizzou Softball Stadium, 8-7.

Georgia (25-6, 1-2) held a one-run lead going to the bottom of the seventh but Missouri (13-11, 2-4) pushed two unearned runs across the plate to take the game and the series.

At the plate, Georgia was led by a three-hit day by Mahlena O'Neal, tallying a new career high for the junior while driving in two runs. Alyssa DiCarlo picked up her fourth multi-home run game, driving in three runs for the Bulldogs.

Now with 61 career home runs, DiCarlo ranks tied for fifth in SEC history with Florida's Francesca Eanea (2007-10).

Mary Wilson Avant (6-2) pitched the complete game in the circle. She fanned nine in the start, allowing six earned runs.

DiCarloput the Bulldogs on the board in the top of the first with a two-out solo home run to centerfield.

Missouri's Jazmyn Rollin answered in the bottom half of the inning with a two-out solo shot of her own to knot the game at one all. The Tigers found a three-run lead in the bottom of the second with a two-run home run by Kim Wert followed by an RBI single from Regan Nash, 4-1 Missouri after two innings.

The Bulldogs immediately answered in the top of the third with a three-spot of their own, all with two out. DiCarlo sliced the lead to one with a two-run home run. After the home run, Lacey Fincher drew a walk and O'Neal singled to short for her second hit of the game. Savana Sikes singled through the right side to drive in Fincher and tie the game at 4-4.

Hatti Moore gave the Tigers the lead back with a solo home run in the bottom of the third, 5-4 Missouri.

The top of the fourth started with leadoff infield singles by Tyler Armistead and CJ Landrum. After two quick outs, Missouri opted to walk DiCarlo to load the bases. Fincher drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to tie the game at five all. O'Neal's third hit of the game was a two-RBI single into right, plating the go-ahead runs for Georgia, 7-5.

Georgia's two-run lead was short-lived as a leadoff home run by Emma Raabe in the bottom half of the fourth reduced the advantage to one, 7-6.

The Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seven. A walk drove in the tying run, knotting the game at seven. The winning run came in to score on a fielding error, 8-7.

Georgia returns to Athens to host #9 LSU next weekend in a three-game series at Jack Turner Stadium. The series kicks off Friday at 6 p.m.
