March 01, 2019 | Men's Tennis

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Behind clinching points from Philip Henning in both doubles and singles, the Georgia Bulldog men's tennis team defeated the No. 15-ranked Tennessee Volunteers, 4-2, to begin SEC play on Friday at the Dr. Robert Barksdale Tennis Stadium.

In their first SEC match, freshmen Trent Bryde and Philip Henning finished undefeated in both doubles and singles. First, the pair played to a 6-4 doubles victory, before winning their respective singles matches to round out the day.

"I'm very proud of this bunch," Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz said. "We showed tremendous focus and intent and played terrific doubles at the two and three spots to set the tempo. Our team got tougher today, and I'm very proud of our freshmen in their first SEC match. We also had great leadership from our seniors, as well as a dominant performance from Robert Loeb."

The Bulldogs won on courts two and three to take the doubles point for the 1-0 advantage going into singles action. The senior duo of Walker Duncan and Emil Reinberg grabbed the first point of the day, winning on court two, 6-3. In the number one spot, Georgia's team of Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski fell to its Tennessee opponent, 6-2, and the doubles point came down to Bulldog freshmen Bryde and Henning on court three. There, the Georgia tandem played in its first-ever SEC matchup and notched a 6-4 victory. With this win, Bryde and Henning improve to 3-0 when playing together.

Three of six singles matches went into third sets. No. 110-ranked junior Loeb dominated at the number five spot, defeating his opponent [6-1, 6-2] to up Georgia's advantage to 2-0. Next, Bryde pushed the score to 3-0 when he won at court three, 7-6 (1), 6-4. From there, courts one, four and six were pushed into third sets. Though senior Walker Duncan took the first set, 6-4, his Vols opponent won the last two sets [6-4, 6-4] to grab the win. The remaining two matches at courts one and four were forced to third-set tiebreakers. Georgia and Tennessee split the wins, with the Vols' No. 113-ranked Timo Stodder defeating No. 5 Zielinski at court one [4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3)]. However, No. 85 Henning clinched the match at court four [6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-2)] for the 4-2 victory.

With this win, the Bulldogs extend their win streak to four and improve to 5-3. The Vols fall to 9-2.

Next, Georgia returns to Athens to face No. 3 Texas on Sunday, March 3, at 1 p.m. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
