Georgia Heads To Statesboro For Next Series

ATHENS-----Ninth-ranked Georgia hits the road for a three-game series against Georgia Southern starting Friday at 6:30 p.m. Both the Saturday and Sunday contests will begin at 1 p.m.

The Bulldogs (7-1) have played their first eight games at home and made two attempts to play at Kennesaw State last week but those contests were rained out. The Eagles (3-4) will be playing their second series against a Southeastern Conference team after opening the year at Auburn. GSU went 1-2 against the Tigers. Last weekend, the Eagles went 1-2 against West Virginia in Statesboro and beat College of Charleston in Mount Pleasant, S.C.

Georgia leads the all-time series with GSU 53-37. Last year in Athens, Georgia claimed the series 2-1 (W 22-9, L 8-3, W 4-3). In 2017, Georgia won a series at GSU 2-1 (W 4-3, W, 7-0, L 2-1). Georgia's Ike Cousins head baseball coach Scott Stricklin notched his 500thcareer victory this past Wednesday as the Bulldogs dispatched KSU 11-1.

Team Notes:
*Georgia's starting pitchers are a combined 7-1 with a 1.71 ERA. 
*The Bulldogs are fielding .980. Last year, Georgia set a school record with a .979 FLDG%.          
*Georgia is 1-1 this week, falling 1-0 to LIU Brooklyn and then beating Kennesaw State 11-1.
*Georgia outscored UMass Lowell 31-12 to post its second consecutive sweep for a 6-0 start to the 2019 campaign. Last Friday's game was postponed due to rain and the series began on Saturday and concluded with a doubleheader Sunday. The Bulldogs hit .361, fielded .990 and posted a 4.32 ERA in the sweep of the River Hawks.
 
Individual Notes:
      *Sophomore RHP Emerson Hancock (2-0, 0.00 ERA) ranks among the SEC leaders in several categories including lowest opponent batting average at .073. He has allowed just three hits in 13 IP. He will start Friday.
      *Junior SS Cam Shepherd (.414-1-9) is batting leadoff this season and has posted a .564 on-base percentage, which ranks second in the SEC. He has reached base in all six games this season and owns a current five-game hitting streak. Last year against Ga. Southern, he provided the game-winning SF for a 4-3 walk-off to clinch the season-opening series.
      *Redshirt sophomore RF Riley King (.433-2-13) leads the team with 13 RBI, that's good for fifth in the SEC. He redshirted in 2017 and was limited to six at bats last season due to injuries.
      *Senior 2B LJ Talleyis off to a hot start, batting a team-best .444-2-9. He has a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 28 total chances and already made several impressive highlight plays.                
      *Junior 3B/Closer Aaron Schunk (.438-2-6; 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 SV) has a four-game hitting streak and already has had three 3-hit games.    
      *Junior RHP Tony Locey (2-0, 3.27 ERA) ranks third in the SEC with 20 strikeouts in only 11 IP. He will start Saturday's game while freshman RHP Cole Wilcox (0-0, 10.80 ERA) will make his first career start Sunday. Junior RHP Will Procto r(2-0, 4.00 ERA), who has made two weekend starts this year, will rest his arm during this series.
