No. 1 Georgia Starts Outdoor Schedule With No. 31 Georgia Tech

ATHENS, Ga. – The top-ranked Georgia women's tennis team, fresh off of winning the ITA Team Indoor Championships, return to the courts Saturday to play No. 31 Georgia Tech at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Play in the 'Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate Rivalry' is set to renew at 1 p.m. If rainy weather persists, competition will be moved to the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts.

The National Indoor title marked the program's sixth team championship and in doing so Georgia improved to 7-0 on the season, which is the best start since 2012. Georgia Tech (3-3) started the season in a 0-3, but have won three-straight matches including its most recent victory against No. 10 Northwestern.

"Now it is time to move on, because we have a long season ahead of us with a lot of big matches," Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace said. "This is our final one before we start the SEC slate, so we are always looking forward to playing Georgia Tech. It is nice that we are at home and it should be a great match."

In the all-time Georgia-Georgia Tech series, the Bulldogs lead 24-6, dating back to 1984. However, the Yellow Jackets have won the last two meetings after Georgia had won six in a row.

"When I first arrived on campus, coach Dan Magill and teammate Allen Miller made it known to me that the UGA-GT rivalry is the biggest match of the year, and you have to be ready to bring it," Wallace added. "I haven't looked at it any other way since. It is always fun, because it is a great rivalry. I think our young ladies are looking forward to it."

With the newest ITA rankings released Wednesday, the No. 1 singles court is projected to be a top-25 matchup between No. 1 Katarina Jokic of Georgia and No. 24 Kenya Jones of Tech. Jokic, a sophomore out of Novi Grad, Bosnia, earned Most Outstanding Player at the National Indoors, while improving to 16-2 on the season. Jones, a junior All-ACC recipient, enters with a 16-7 mark.

Each squad has one ranked doubles team. Jokic pairs with freshman Meg Kowalski at No. 54, playing on court three up to this point in the season. The Bulldog duo went 2-0 at National Indoors, garnering ITA All-Tournament Team for No. 3 Doubles. Georgia Tech's Jones and Jeanette Lin, ranked No. 33, are 4-3 on the season.
