February 16, 2019 | Baseball

ATHENS, Ga. – Ninth-ranked Georgia completed a three-game sweep of Dayton Saturday after claiming a doubleheader by scores of 10-7 and 13-1 in front of a Foley Field crowd of 3,204.

In game one Saturday,  second baseman LJ Talley went 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs and his first home run of the season while Patrick Sullivan chipped in with three RBI and his first career home run to pace an 11-hit attack. Redshirt sophomore right fielder Riley King (2-3, R, BB), junior shortstop Cam Shepherd (2-2, 3R, RBI, 3BB), and junior left fielder Tucker Bradley (2-4, 2RBI, 1R) also registered multi-hit games for the Bulldogs.
Junior Will Proctor (1-0) struck out a career high nine in five innings while junior Aaron Schunk registered his first save by getting the final two outs to clinch the series.

In game two, Shepherd went 3-for-5 with three runs, one RBI and one double. Schunk tallied three doubles in his first three at bats as part of a 3-for-4 day while King (2-4, 3RBI, 2R) also chipped in as Sullivan with three more RBI in a 13-1 rout to improve to 3-0 on the season.

In game one, the Flyers got on the scoreboard first, but a four-run third inning gave the Bulldogs the lead that they didn't relinquish. Bradley sent a grounder screaming past the first baseman for his first career triple, which scored Shepherd and freshman catcher Shane Marshall. Two batters later, Talley clobbered a two-run home run to right field for the 4-1 Georgia lead.  Both teams exchanged one-run innings in the fourth, before Georgia extended its three-run lead to five in the bottom of the fifth. Sullivan hit his first career home run in a big way as it landed on top of the scoreboard in right field. Since King reached earlier in the inning on a single, the homer scored two and Georgia's lead grew to 7-2. Georgia added another run in the seventh and entered the ninth with a 10-4 lead, which was enough to hold off the Flyers' late runs.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Georgia junior right-hander Tony Locey (1-0) posted a career-high 10 strikeouts over six innings for the victory. He allowed one run on three hits before giving way to Adam Goodman, Jack Gowen and Tim Elliott who combined to take care of the final three frames.

Coach's Corner
Ike Cousins Head Baseball Coach Scott Stricklin
On the crowd
"We had a great crowd today especially with a noon start, and overall we had a great day as they got to see us win a couple of games. It's nice when the stands are packed plus a crowd on the hill in right field and the fans in the left field parking lot. It shows the fans are excited about this club and we are too."

On the offense today in outscoring Dayton a combined 23-8 in earning two wins
"I thought everybody had really good at bats and took advantage of some of their mistakes. A couple of times we got in a rundown and we somehow got out of it and later in the inning we hit home runs. A lot of our guys performed today and that helps us with our depth. This will keep the pressure on the starters because everybody wants to play.  The offense certainly helped the starting pitching, which I thought was outstanding in all three games. All three starters got wins."

Player's Perspective

Junior Shortstop Cam Shepherd
"I felt good today, and I felt good yesterday too. I hit the ball right at people Friday but I'm seeing the ball really well. I'm at the top of the order so I take what I can get."

Junior Pitcher Will Proctor
"Obviously, you're a little nervous going into it, especially this being my first time being a starter at home. But once I got out there, it's just pitching.  All the people up on the hill cheering for us, it was wild. I was looking to throw as many strikes as possible, and I thought I did a good job at that with all three of my pitches."

Aaron Schunk on teammate Riley King
"I've been playing with him since I was in high school, and I've always know him to a grinder. He's a kid that goes out and works every day, and he tries to be the best player he can be and just soaks up information. It might be new to some people, but we've seen him playing well before. You can ask anybody on the team, we're all his number one fan right now because of all the work he's put in and how he's getting to play now."
