Senior Spotlight: Madison Anger
February 14, 2019 | Equestrian
Senior Horsemanship rider Madison Anger is from Clyde Hill, Wash., and will be graduating in May with a Biology and Cellular Biology degree. Maddie describes UGA Equestrian as "machinelike," try your best to be grammatically correct around her, and you can always win her over with a Starbucks hot chocolate… but make sure to leave off the whip cream!
Describe the UGA equestrian team in one word.
"Machinelike. There are a lot of moving parts, but we always get the job done."
What is your favorite memory with UGA equestrian?
"My favorite moment was when we won the SEC Championship my sophomore year. I remember the day well in part because I drew a horse I had been wanting to ride since starting school and because our horsemanship team swept to start off with a big lead."
What legacy do you want to leave at Georgia?
"I want to have been a good teammate to underclassmen. I think as a senior it's easy to forget everything you went through as an underclassman. I remember being terrified to talk to anyone and was so honored when seniors would help me. I would love for my legacy to be that anyone felt like they could approach me and talk to me about anything. I think when everyone feels valid, especially with a big team like ours, it makes a big difference in how well we work together."
First thing you are doing after graduation?
"I'll be going home to Seattle and plan to take a gap year before going to medical school, hopefully at the University of Washington. During my gap year, I plan to shadow various doctors and (hopefully) work at one of the internships I applied to. If I'm lucky, I'll also be able to squeeze in some traveling and horseback riding (obviously)."
If you could play any other sport what would it be and why?
"I would play tennis. My dad is a tennis coach and I grew up playing tennis. I wanted to play in college until I started showing horses when I was about 14 when I changed my mind."
If you had to switch places with another person (on the team) who would it be and why?
"I think I'd want to switch places with our resident barn cat, Winston. He really lives the life. He gets to lounge around, he can frolic and play any time he wants, and he gets loads of attention. The only issue is that he spends a lot of time chasing mice, so I might have to find another activity to pass the time. Other than that, his life sounds good to me!"
Starbucks coffee order:
"Hot chocolate with no whipped cream in the winter, strawberry smoothie in the summer!"
What is your biggest pet peeve?
"My biggest pet peeve is grammatical errors (such as mixing up your/you're or there/their/they're). Please pay attention in class, folks."
What is your biggest goal in life?
"I look a lot to my dad for this one. He always shared the quote (and I'm paraphrasing): "If you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life," and felt like he succeeded in achieving that by playing tennis professionally and going on to coach collegiate tennis. I think my biggest goal would be to find a career that I really enjoy doing and that challenges me every day. I also have this random goal to travel to all seven continents, so I better hope whatever career makes me happy also makes me enough money to travel."
What do you like about the discipline you ride?
"I like horsemanship because a lot of it is based on the layout of the pattern. There are so many details within each maneuver that can make or break your ride. I always have fun mapping everything out and visualizing what I need to do before making it happen."
