Hertel Signs With Georgia, Will Join Team in January

ATHENS---- The Georgia women's tennis program announced Monday the signing of Anna Hertel to a national letter of intent to attend UGA starting in January.

A native of Warsaw, Poland, she will arrive in Athens for the spring semester as one of the most experienced international players with a career best juniors ranking of No. 46. The daughter of Małgorzata Ławniczak Hertel and Jerzy Hertel, she has played in all four junior grand slam tournaments. She has been ranked as high as 694 in singles and 336 in doubles by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA).
 
Hertel's career highlights in singles include reaching the quarterfinals of a $25K summer event where she beat a player ranked No. 435 (Nina Potocnik) in the world and then forced the No. 316 player (Dejana Radanovic) to three sets. She notched a win during a $60K qualifying event over No. 450 Lucrezia Stafanini, and she's reached the semifinals of a $15K tournament in Serbia. Hertel has registered a pair of ITF Grade 2 singles titles and reached the finals in two Grade 2 events.
 
In doubles, Hertel made the semifinals of an $80K tournament where she notched a win over Mandy Minella and Johanna Larsson. Minella is No. 66 in the world in doubles and Larsson advanced to the semifinals of the 2019 French Open. She has reached the finals of two $25K tournaments and won a $25K title in Poland and a $15K event in Spain this year. Also, Hertel claimed the Eddie Herr International title and won the Banana Bowl ITF Grade 1 title. She made it to the round of 16 at the US Open Junior Championships.
 
"We're excited that Anna is coming to Georgia and will join the Bulldog family" said Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace. "She will be a wonderful addition to the program. She has a strong work ethic on and off the court."

During her career, Hertel has trained at the Legia Warsaw Tennis Club Academy under the direction of Lukasz Olszewski and attended the International European School in Warsaw.
 
The spring semester at UGA begins on Jan. 7, and the first national team Oracle/ITA rankings will be released on Jan. 8. Georgia ended the 2019 season ranked No. 2 after reaching the finals of the NCAA Championships to close out the campaign with a 28-2 record. The Bulldogs are the defending Southeastern Conference champions as well as the ITA National Team Indoor champions.
 
The collegiate season resumes in late January with the ITA Kick-off Weekend. Host sites were selected based on the final 2019 Oracle/ITA Rankings. The Bulldogs will play host to a kick-off event featuring  Notre Dame, Furman and Michigan State. Georgia will be the top seed here and will open against No. 4 seed Michigan State on Saturday, Jan. 25 while No. 2 seed Notre Dame plays No. 3 seed Furman. On Sunday, the 26th, the losing teams play a match followed by the winners. The winner of the ITA Kick-Off event advances to the National Team Indoors, Feb. 5-10 in Chicago.
