Softball Boasts Strong 2020 Signing Class

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Georgia softball program has announced 10 signees for the 2021 season. 
 
The class features infielder Ellie Armistead, infielder Cayla Bishop, infielder Aniyah Black, catcher Payden Bordeau, outfielder/first baseman Sydney Chambley, outfielder Hayley Eaton, outfielder Jayda Kearney, pitcher Madison Kerpics, pitcher Riley Orcutt, and pitcher Britton Rogers. 
 
Extra Innings Softball ranks the class as the fourth-best signing class in the nation as the class features five of its Elite 100 players and eight on its list of top 200. 
 
Associate head coach and recruiting coordinator Tony Baldwin provided quotes on each signee. 
 
Ellie Armistead | Infield | Mathews, Va. | Mathews HS
Infielder Ellie Armistead signs to Georgia out of Mathews High School in Virginia. A three-sport athlete for the Blue Devils, Armistead competed in softball, basketball, and cross country. She was a first team all-state third baseman as a freshman, helping guide Mathews to a state championship. She followed up her rookie season with all-district and all-region honors as a sophomore. Her junior season was put on hold after a knee injury during basketball season but will be back on the diamond this spring. 
 
On the basketball court, Armistead put up 440 points as a freshman and 435 as a sophomore. She has earned all-district and all-region accolades three seasons of basketball as well as being named the player of the year as a sophomore. She also holds the girls course record during her one season of cross country freshman year. 
 
In the classroom, she's a member of Beta Club and National Honor Society. 
 
She played club for the Hanover Lady Hornets. 
 
Ellie is the daughter of Stephanie and Wayne Armistead. She has one brother, Ethan. She is undecided on a major at Georgia. 
 
Baldwin on Armistead: "Ellie Armistead is one of the most underrated players in the country. You will be hard pressed to find a more athletic middle infielder anywhere and we are excited for Bulldog fans to get to watch her play. Her defensive skills are among the best in country and has a tremendous softball I.Q. Offensively, she can put pressure on the defense with her speed and also hit the ball out of the park. She plays with a bounce in her step and is a tremendous competitor. We are excited to have Ellie as part of Bulldog Nation."
 
Cayla Bishop | Infield | Barnesville, Ga. | Lamar County HS
Georgia native Cayla Bishop signs to UGA after a four-year softball career at Lamar County High School. In her first two seasons, Bishop appeared behind the plate, earning region player of the year and all-state accolades as a freshman. She hit .495 with eight home runs, 26 RBI, and an .895 slugging percentage. In her sophomore season with the Trojans, Bishop hit .431 with an .824 slugging percentage en route to second team all-state honors. After an injury sidelined her during her junior season, she was back on the diamond last season, this time at shortstop, once again receiving region player of the year honors, hitting .518 with a .585 on base and 1.152 slugging percentages while knocking 17 home runs with 38 RBI. She comes in at 33rd on Extra Innings' Elite 100 list and 24th on its infielders list. 
 
She played club for the EC Bullets as a utility player. 
 
Cayla is the daughter of Samantha and Dane Bishop. She has an older brother, Calvin Adams, and a younger sister, Cara Beth. Both of her parents are UGA graduates along with her aunt Crystal Wingfield. Her brother Calvin played baseball and golf at Gordon State from 2009-10. She intends to major in Exercise Science at Georgia. 
 
Baldwin on Bishop: "Cayla Bishop is a versatile defender that can really swing the bat. She is a physical player that has pop in her bat and can play any of the four infield positions. Cayla has played on competitive travel teams for a number of years and has always performed well on the big stage. We believe that her best days as a player are ahead of her and we can't wait to see her perform for the Red and Black."

 
Payden Bordeau | Catcher | Apopka, Fla. | Lake Brantley HS
Catcher Payden Bordeau signs to Georgia from Lake Brantley High School in Florida. A four-year varsity player, Bordeau was a first team all-conference honoree and was the varsity defensive player of the year. During her sophomore season, she was named the offensive player of the year while earning first team all-conference honors once again while also garnering conference academic accolades. Bordeau comes in at t-58th on Extra Innings' Elite 100 list and 11th on the catchers list. 
 
She played club for the Firecrackers and hit .389 during the 2019 season with 12 home runs. She did not allow a single runner to steal during the 2019 PGF Nationals tournament. 
 
Off the field, she is a member of the National Honor Society and Student-Athlete Leadership Team. 
 
Payden is the daughter of Stacy and Mark Bordeau. She has an older brother, Logan, and a younger sister, Bristin. Her uncle, Ryan Dillon, was a pro golfer. 
 
Baldwin on Bordeau: "Payden Bordeau is a skilled defensive catcher out of Central Florida. She is a tremendous receiver and someone that pitchers really like to work with. She has a very good arm and the ability to control the running game. She has played high level travel ball for a number of years and has a high softball I.Q. She can also swing the bat with serious pop! We look forward to having Payden in a Bulldog uniform!"
 
Aniyah Black | Infield | Chauncey, Ga. | Dodge County HS
Georgia native and infielder Aniyah Black signs to Georgia from Dodge County High School. There, she was a three-sport athlete including softball, track & field, and basketball. She helped guide the Indians to four-straight region championships (2016-19) in softball and three-straight in basketball (2017-19). Her softball accolades include a spot on the Junior All-Star team and multiple first team all-region and all-state honors. She comes in at t-83rd on Extra Innings Softball's Elite 100 list and 58th for infielders. As a senior, Back hit .517 with a 1.313 OPS. 
 
She played center on the basketball team and was a member of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams while also competing in shot put on the track & field team. 
 
As well as being a standout on the field or court of play, she is a star student in the classroom as a member of Beta Club, math club, the Principal's Advisory, student council president, and was named 2019 homecoming queen among many other accomplishments at Dodge County High School. 
 
She played club for the Georgia Impact and the Firecrackers.
 
Aniyah is the daughter of Rickina and Tavarius Black. She has two older siblings, Jamarius and Tristynee. She intends to major in Chemistry at Georgia.  
 
Baldwin on Black: "Aniyah Black is an infielder from South Georgia. She is a smooth fielder with a good arm that can play shortstop. She is a quiet competitor that can really swing the bat. Her ability to hit both velocity and off-speed pitches is at a high level already and she still has potential to get better. As a lifelong Georgia fan, we are excited to have Nya part of the Bulldog family and look forward seeing her perform in a Georgia uniform."

Sydney Chambley | Outfield/First Base | Dallas, Ga. | Mount Paran Christian HS
Georgia native Sydney Chambley has been a four-year letterwinner at Mount Paran Christian High School. She's a two-time all-county, all-region, and all-state performer. As a freshman, Chambley hit .614 with seven home runs and 16 stolen bases. In the circle and fanned 214 batters. During her sophomore season, she once again hit an astounding .653 with a .701 on-base percentage with 13 home runs and 33 stolen bags. She also struck out 215 hitters. Chambley hit .551 with 12 homers as a junior while hitting .500 with a .686 on-base clip as a senior last season. She's 67th on Softball America's top 100 players list and 32nd on its outfielders list. 
 
She played club for the Atlanta Vipers. The Vipers finished second in the ASA Gold in 2017 and won the Triple Crown regional championship in 2018. 
 
Aside from softball, Chambley participated in basketball as a freshman and will play lacrosse in the spring. Away from athletics, she's a member of the chapel band, 11:1, PMI, and an honor roll student. 
 
Sydney is the daughter of Joy and Todd Chambley. She has two younger siblings: Sofie and John. She intends to major in marketing at Georgia.
 
Baldwin on Chambley: "Sydney Chambley is a softball player! She can play outfield and first base and has pitched her HS team to the Elite 8 each of the last two years. Aside from her defensive versatility, Sydney can really swing the bat. She has surprising power for her build and is ultra-competitive in the batter's box. She is a very good runner and can put pressure on the defense in a lot of ways. We are excited that Sydney chose to become a Bulldog and look forward to seeing her perform in the Red and Black."
 
Hayley Eaton | Outfield | Belleair, Fla. | Calvary Christian HS
Outfielder Hayley Eaton signs to Georgia out of Calvary Christian High School in Florida. She was named the freshman of the year after hitting .542 with 11 RBI as a rookie. Despite her sophomore season being cut short by injury, she still hit .400 while driving in 13 runs. Last season, she hit .566 with 44 RBI, 11 doubles, eight triples, and a pair of home runs. She was the 4A district player of the year, first team all-state, first team all-county and Tampa Bay third team selection. She comes in at 92nd on Softball America's top 100 players list on 44th on Extra Innings' outfielders list. 
 
She played club for the Birmingham Thunderbolts and the Clearwater Bullets. 
 
Hayley is the daughter of Marybeth and William Eaton. She has an older sister, Kylie, and a younger brother, William. She intends to major in Exercise and Sport Science at UGA. 
 
Baldwin on Eaton: "Hayley Eaton is a lefty hitter that can hit for gap power and a high average. She has similar qualities to a number of successful left-handed hitters that we have had over the years. She is someone that loves softball, plays with a smile on her face, and is not afraid to work hard and compete hard. We are thrilled that Hayley chose to be a Bulldog and are excited to welcome her to Bulldog Nation."

 
Jayda Kearney | Outfield | Columbus, N.J. | Donovan Catholic HS
Jayda Kearney signs to Georgia from Donovan Catholic High School in New Jersey. She comes in as t-13th on Extra Innings' Elite 100 list and the number two outfield recruit. She's a four-year letterwinner for the Griffins. Through three seasons, she's a three-time high school all-american, all-state, all-region, and all-conference honoree. From freshman to junior year, she has guided Donovan to a record of 85-4. She hit .596 as a sophomore with 12 home runs and 45 RBI then hit .480 with 41 RBI and 17 stolen bases last season as a junior. In her high school career, she has gone 30-for-32 on the base paths and has only committed three errors in the outfield. 
 
She played club for Jersey Intensity. The Intensity placed fifth in PGF Nationals twice. Kearney has also played forward for three years on the basketball team along with being an honor roll student. 
 
Jayda is the daughter of Nicole and James Kearney. Her father James played football at West Virginia and played professionally for the Steelers and Packers. She hopes to major in either pre-law, communications, or business at Georgia. 
 
Baldwin on Kearney: "Jayda Kearney is one of the top offensive players in the country. She is a tremendous athlete that can play anywhere in the outfield. She has the ability to hit for high average and has above-average power. She understands the strike zone and has a knack for being clutch in the big moments. She has performed well in the biggest tournaments and against the best competition and we look forward to her doing those same things in Athens."

 
Madison Kerpics | Pitcher | Suwanee, Ga. | Wesleyan HS
Georgia native Madison Kerpics signs to Georgia from Wesleyan High School. She was a four-year letterwinner in the circle for the Wolves. During her rookie season, she was a first team all-region pick. She followed that up by earning first team all-state, all-county, and all-region honors on top of being named the Class-A Private Player of the Year with a 12-2 record in the circle. She once again earned pitcher of the year status in Class-A Private while also picking up first team All-America status as a junior with a 20-2 record and a 0.68 ERA with 283 strikeouts. She concluded her senior season going 36-2 in the circle and earning pitcher of the year honors once again. She guided the Wolves to two state championships in 2017 and 2018 while finishing runners up in 2016 and 2019. 
 
Kerpics played club for the Atlanta Vipers. Off the field, she is a member of Peer Leadership and received the academic excellence award for chemistry. 
 
Madison is the daughter of Mary and Michael Kerpics. She has two siblings: Morgan and Nathan. Her sister Morgan is currently enrolled at UGA. 
 
Baldwin on Kerpics: "Madison Kerpics is a winner in the circle. She has a quiet demeanor but inside has a burning desire to compete. She has really good deception with her pitches and can do a number of things to keep hitters off balance. She continues to get better each year and we believe that her best days are still ahead. We are thrilled that Madi chose to be a Bulldog and look forward to great things from her during her time in Athens."
 
Riley Orcutt | Pitcher | Newport Beach, Calif. | Mater Dei HS
Pitcher Riley Orcutt signs to Georgia out of Mater Dei High School in California. She has been a two-sport athlete for the Monarchs, competing in softball and volleyball. In the circle, she has earned academic honors and guided Mater Dei to a Trinity League championship last season. She ranks 70th on Extra Innings' pitchers list. On the volleyball court, she earned back-to-back MVP awards as a freshman and sophomore. 
 
Away from athletics, she's a multi-time academic award winner and a member of National Honor Society and the California Scholarship Federation. 
 
She played club for the Firecrackers and placed seventh at PGF Nationals. 
 
Riley is the daughter of Shelley and Bruce Orcutt. She has a younger brother, Brad. Her father Bruce plater water polo and swam at Fresno State. Her aunt Shannon was a swimmer at Ohio State and Southern California. 
 
Baldwin on Orcutt: "Riley Orcutt is a pitcher with tremendous upside. She is 6-0 tall and a really good competitor. Riley is one of the most positive people you will ever meet and will undoubtedly be a great addition to our team. Her best days as a pitcher are still ahead of her and we are excited to see what she can do in a Bulldog uniform."
 
Britton Rogers | Pitcher | Cypress, Texas | Cypress Ranch HS
Pitcher Britton Rogers signs to Georgia from Cypress Ranch High School in Texas. Rogers comes in at t-16th on Extra Innings' Elite 100 list and 11th on its pitchers list. Rogers has been a standout for the Mustangs both in the circle and the outfield. She's a back-to-back first team all-district, district and team MVP. She picked up all-Greater Houston and all-state honors last season as a junior. During her sophomore campaign, Rogers pitched 73.1 innings, striking out 125 batters en route to a 1.54 ERA. At the plate, she hit .450. As a junior, she worked 129.2 innings with 217 strikeouts and a minuscule 0.38 ERA while hitting .340. In the circle, she went 29-5 the last two seasons for the Mustangs. She played her freshman prep season at Timber Creek in Florida, earning all-state, all-county, and all-metro accolades. 
 
She's played club for the Firecrackers organization. They placed third at the PGF in 2018 while earning a first-place finish at TC Nationals that same year. 
 
In the classroom, she is a member of the all-A's honor roll, the math honor society, and HOSA. 
 
She is the daughter of Courtney and Chad Rogers. She has a younger brother, Barrett. Her mother, Courtney Blades-Rogers, played for Lu Harris-Champer at Nicholls State then Southern Mississippi. She completed her career with 1,773 strikeouts (fifth in NCAA history), ranks second all-time with 215 wins, and holds the record for 52 victories in a season among many other pitching accomplishments. Her father, Chad, was also a pitcher at Southern Miss. She intends to major in Biology at UGA. 
 
Baldwin on Rogers: "Britton Rogers has as competitive of a mindset of any pitcher we scouted. In her career to this point, she has pitched her best in the big games and we look forward to that being the case in Athens. Her potential as a pitcher is through the roof and her best days are right around the corner. We are excited to have Britton as a part of Bulldog Nation."
