Bulldogs Open In Ninth In Hawaii Tournament

LAHAINA, Hawaii --- The Georgia men's golf team stands ninth after the first round of the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational.
On Royal Ka'anapali's par-71, 6,700-yard layout on Friday, the 20th-ranked Bulldogs fired a 7-under 277. Oklahoma and Kansas lead at 16-under 268, followed by UCLA at 15-under 269, Liberty at 12-under 272, and West Virginia at 11-under 273.
The Bulldogs were paced by sophomore Trent Phillips, who fired a 6-under 65 to land in a tie for third place. Trevor Phillips, a senior competing as an individual, also had a career-best 6-under 65 that included one eagle and seven birdies. The Phillips brothers are trailing Oklahoma's Garett Reband and Kansas' Andy Spencer by a stroke.
Junior Davis Thompson closed with four straight birdies to finish with a 3-under 68.
Georgia also counted senior Calum Masters' 1-over 72 and redshirt freshman Nicolas Cassidy's 1-over 72. Senior Spencer Ralston had the Bulldogs' non-counting score of 2-over 73.
The Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational will continue on Saturday and will conclude on Sunday with 2:30 p.m. EDT shotgun starts. Live scoring and pairings can be found at Golfstat.
