Henning, Croyder Advance to ITA All-America Main Draw
October 08, 2019 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. — Georgia men's tennis sophomore Philip Henning earned a spot in the main draw of the ITA All-America singles championship, before teaming with fellow sophomore Blake Croyder to qualify for the main draw in doubles on Tuesday.
Henning won two singles matches, both in straight-sets, to take one of 16 spots available to qualifiers. In doubles, he and Croyder defeated Stanford's 47th-ranked tandem of Alex Rotsaert and Sangeet Sridhar, 6-4, 6-3.
It marked the Bulldog duo's fourth-straight win and second consecutive triumph against a seeded, ranked opponent. Henning's singles win on Tuesday improved his overall record to 6-1 this fall. The South Africa native has now lost just three sets in seven total matches over the last two weeks.
"I am really happy for Philip to get through to the main draw," associate head coach Jamie Hunt said. "He is playing some exceptional tennis and can do some damage in the main draw. In doubles, Phil and Blake got down two breaks early but made some great adjustments and battled back to win against a well coached and tough Stanford team"
The main draw opens on Wednesday, with the singles and doubles finals set to take place on Sunday, Oct. 13. The singles draw consists of 64 total players, while doubles is a 32-team format.
