January 27, 2019 | Men's Tennis
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Despite a comeback in singles action, the No. 12-ranked Georgia men's tennis team fell to NC State, 4-3, at the 2019 ITA Kick-Off in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs headed into doubles play down, 1-0, to the Pack. Seniors Walker Duncan and Jan Zielinski, along with freshman Philip Henning, assured the Georgia comeback in their respective singles matches. First, Duncan tied the match, 1-1, on court five, while Henning took the win on court four to make the score 2-all. Locked in a third-set match, Zielinski came out on top to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the day (3-2). Also in a third-set match, senior Emil Reinberg fell to Alexis Galarneau, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, to give NC State the 4-3 victory.
"Our guys fought extremely well," Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz said. "In doubles, we do need to work on maintaining our momentum and distancing ourselves early, but I think we've got a great group that's only going to get better. We just need to stay tough, stay the course and work hard. I know you're going to see our guys come through, and we're very excited to get back to Athens and play at home this weekend."
NC State clinched the doubles point after winning, 7-6 (5), in a tiebreaker over Georgia's team of Reinberg and redshirt-sophomore Alex Diaz. This followed a 7-6 (6) Georgia win on court two, with the Bulldogs' duo of Duncan and Henning defeating NC State's Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic, 7-6 (6). On court one, the Pack took a commanding 6-2 victory over Georgia's top tandem junior Robert Loeb and Zielinski.
Next, the Bulldogs and the Pack split first sets on the singles courts, with Georgia taking victories on courts four, five and six, while NC State won on the first three courts.
Duncan put the Bulldogs team on the board to tie it 1-all with a commanding 6-1, 6-1, victory over NC State opponent Robert Turzak. This came before Loeb fell to Igor Savellic in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, giving the Pack a 2-1 advantage.
Again, Georgia managed to tie it up thanks to Henning's 6-3, 6-4, win over Yannai Barkai. With the score tied 2-all, Georgia's remaining three matches, including Zielinski, Reinberg and freshman Blake Croyder, all headed into third sets.
Zielinski, ranked No. 2 in ITA singles rankings, gave Georgia its first lead of the day, taking down Tadas Babelis in the third set (5-7, 6-3, 6-4). However, a victory for the Pack on Croyder's court six tied it back, 3-all.
The match came down to court one's match between Reinberg and Galarneau of NC State. Reinberg managed a comeback late in the third set, but Galarneau broke the senior Bulldog at deuce to win the match, 4-3.
The Bulldogs return to Athens to host Georgia Tech on Sunday, Feb. 3, at 1 p.m. ET.
