MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Georgia equestrian team fell to the University of Tennessee at Martin (UTM), 11-9, at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion on Thursday afternoon.
A career-first Most Outstanding Performance honor for sophomore Hayley Mairano (Equitation Over Fences) highlighted Georgia's meet against UTM.
"It's always tough when you have a loss. I think, in this case, there were too many little errors and things that caught up with us that we have to continue to eliminate," said Georgia head coach Meghan Boenig. "I think there were a lot of little bright spots and some really good rides put in but, at the end of the day, there is always something we can work on, and today is no exception to that. I don't think that there is any give-up in this group, and I expect that today will only make us stronger."
Georgia (2-4, 1-2 SEC) clinched the first event, Equitation Over Fences, 4-1, over UTM (3-5, 1-2 UEC). The Bulldogs notched the first three points when juniors Maddy Darst and Ali Tritschler and Mairano rode to the scores of 84, 86 and 81, respectively. The Skyhawks' Kelby Kane outscored senior Emma Mandarino 83-81. Georgia junior Sydney Hutchins scored a 72 to secure the event win over UTM's Savannah Metheny's 0.
Senior Graysen Stroud ousted Skyhawks' Lucy Eier, 77-73.5, to earn the starting point for Horsemanship. Junior Maddie Fiorante made her first appearance in the lineup to bring in another point for the Bulldogs defeating UTM's Devon Woods, 72.5-71. The Skyhawks claimed the event, 3-2.
Heading into Equitation on the Flat and Reining, the last two events of the day, the Bulldogs led the Skyhawks, 6-4.
To begin Equitation on the Flat, senior Madison Newman defeated UTM rider Abbie Hopkins, 72-69. Bringing in another point for the Bulldogs, Darst topped Skyhawk Monika Zoromski, 88-79. UTM secured the final three points to claim the event, 3-2, over Georgia.
Stroud earned her second point for Georgia with a 71.5 over UTM's Sammi Felts. However, the Skyhawks won the event, 4-1, securing their overall victory over the Bulldogs.
Up next for Georgia, the Bulldogs will host the Texas A&M Aggies at the UGA Equestrian Complex on Saturday, February 9, at 11 A.M in Bishop, Georgia.
