Trio of Singles Wins Highlight Day Two at MLK Invite
January 20, 2019 | Men's Tennis
ATLANTA — Freshmen Philip Henning and Britton Johnston, along with senior Emil Reinberg, won their singles matches to highlight the second day of action at the 2019 MLK Invitational on Sunday.
Henning is now 2-0 in his young Bulldog career with two wins against ranked opponents. On Sunday, he ousted Illinois' 71st-ranked Kennan Mayo, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
Johnston defeated Gui Gomes, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, while Reinberg took down 10th-ranked Alex Brown, 7-6, 7-6.
"Those were really good wins from Emil, Philip and Britton in singles," head coach Manuel Diaz said. "I felt that Alex Phillips and Robert Loeb played very good matches even in defeat today. We did not take advantage of some opportunities like we did yesterday in doubles, but I feel good about where we are in doubles. A few of our guys need to clean up some little things in order to have better success in big points. We have a really big test tomorrow."
After going 4-0 in doubles on Saturday, Georgia was able to get just one win on Sunday as Blake Croyder and Walker Duncan teamed together to down the 32nd-ranked duo if Noe Khlif and Gui Gomes, 6-1. The remaining three matches came down to the wire, with Illinois taking wins in each.
Georgia will wrap up the final day of the MLK Invite against Georgia Tech at 2 p.m. ET on Monday.
