Doubles Play Highlights Day One at MLK Invitational

January 19, 2019 | Men's Tennis

ATLANTA — The University of Georgia men's tennis team went 4-0 in doubles against No. 15 Columbia to begin action at the 2019 MLK Invitational on Saturday at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.

Playing in a 'round-robin' format with no dual-match score, the Bulldogs recorded four doubles wins and two singles victories against ranked opponents to wrap up the first day of play.

"We came out and did some really nice things in doubles," head coach Manuel Diaz said. "It was great to see some of the young guys get their first taste of college tennis and it was also great to see Walker back out there. Our main issue last season and this past fall has been our injuries. We are trying to get guys back at 100 percent, and today was a step in the right direction. We have a long way to go."

The Georgia tandem of Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski picked up perhaps the best win of the day, taking down the nation's No. 4-ranked duo of William Matheson and Jack Lin, 6-1.

Freshman Philip Henning and senior Walker Duncan looked impressive in their first time playing together with a 6-4 victory against the Lions' 20th-ranked tandem of Adam Ambrozy and Jackie Tang.

Henning also got the best of Ambrozy in singles, as he took down the 108th-ranked Ambrozy, 6-4, 6-1. Loeb recorded Georgia's only other victory in a strong showing against the nation's 28th-ranked singles player with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph against Jackie Tang.

The No. 12-ranked Bulldogs will take on No. 16 Illinois on Sunday at 9 a.m. ET.
