Bulldogs Welcome Texas To Athens
January 11, 2019 | Swimming & Diving
ATHENS, Ga. — The Georgia swimming and diving teams will return to action on Saturday as they entertain Texas.
Saturday's meet will begin at 10 a.m. Admission to Gabrielsen Natatorium inside the Ramsey Center is free. The first 450 fans will receive an Allison Schmitt bobblehead.
Saturday's meet also will air on SEC Network+ with Jeff Dantzler handling play-by-play and Michelle McKeehan Versfeld (swimming) and Madison Duvall (diving) offering analysis.
The No. 12 Bulldogs are coming off of their second win of the season against Harvard on Monday to match the 11th-ranked Lady Bulldogs' dual meet record of 2-1.
"Preparation for Texas has been pretty good," junior Javier Acevedo said. "I think that this past meet for the guys was really good and our Christmas training as well. Getting that (Harvard) meet in right after the break and getting those kinks out really helps us set up for what hopefully is about to be a really good meet for us on Saturday.
This will be the first meet of 2019 for the Lady Bulldogs, who last competed Nov. 29-Dec. 1 in the UGA Fall Invitational.
"Recently we've been working on the little details, getting our starts down, especially relay exchanges, and our finishes too," junior Veronica Burchill said. "We've been training really hard the past couple of months. Winter training, especially, is probably one of the hardest times of the year. I think a lot of people are ready to swim fast."
The Longhorns will be taking on the second leg of their SEC route as they are coming off a sweep at Auburn on Thursday. The top-ranked Texas women won 161-139 and the No. 2 men claimed a 164-131 victory.
The Texas women are coached by Carol Capitani, who spent 14 years on the Georgia staff before moving to Austin seven seasons ago. Bauerle and Texas men's coach Eddie Reese were the United States Olympics coaches in 2008.
Texas will be the last home event for the month as Georgia travels to Tennessee on Jan. 26. Georgia will return to Athens for the Senior Day meet with Emory on Feb. 2. The 2019 SEC Championships will take place at Gabrielsen Natatorium Feb. 19-23.
