Georgia Defeats Georgia State, 2-0

September 07, 2018 | Soccer

ATHENS, Ga.  ---
Two goals from sophomore Reagan Glisson led the Georgia (3-2-2) soccer team to a shutout victory over the Georgia State Panthers (2-4-1), 2-0, on Friday night at the Turner Soccer Complex.

"We played a very good first half," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "It's great to get a couple goals in before halftime. I thought we lost a little bit of our energy in the second half, but sometimes it's difficult to play when you are the player up- it's counterintuitive. I thought they got behind the ball and we did not move the ball as quickly as we could in the second half.  For us to be home and get a Friday night win is really good for our confidence, so I am really pleased with that."

Georgia took the lead nine minutes into the game after freshman Abby Boyan tapped the ball to Glisson for the finish from outside the box.

Glisson notched the second goal after a slide tackle in the box awarded the Bulldogs with a penalty kick opportunity, allowing the Savannah native to boot the ball to the back of the net for the 2-0 cushion.

"I think it gives everybody behind her confidence that Reagan (Glisson) will create some chances," Lesesne said about Glisson being a consistent scoring threat. "She had some other shots there in the first half. When you have somebody who is playing at a high level, feeding them and giving them opportunities is a really big thing for the rest of our team.  I thought we spread the ball around and gave her some opportunities and she was able to step up and finish one early. She wanted the responsibility of taking the penalty kick which was good to see as well."

Georgia held the 2-0 lead into the locker room at half time and held that lead for the remainder of the game.

With about 30 minutes left to play, Georgia State's Rebecca Crouch received a red card causing the Panthers to play the rest of the game with only ten players.  Georgia State tallied a total 12 fouls.

The Bulldogs' defense only allowed six shots, with freshman goalkeeper Emory Wegener making four saves. Glisson led Georgia with six of the team's 18 total shots.  Boyan, Delaney Erwin, and Katie Higgins each took two.

"Billy (Lesesne) has talked about it all week how this is like a state championship for us," Glisson said. "We won this game and now it's onto the next on Sunday against Kennesaw State."

The Bulldogs will head to Kennesaw to face the Owls on Sunday at 6 p.m.
