Bulldogs Sweep NC State in Non-Conference Finale

September 15, 2018 | Volleyball

ATLANTA – The Georgia volleyball team (9-2) swept NC State (6-4) Saturday afternoon to bring a close to its non-conference schedule (26-24, 25-22, 25-21).

"We did a nice job responding from the service line from the previous evening, which obviously has a huge impact on the match," said head coach Tom Black. "NC State is a really good team, very physical. I thought our defense upgraded as well. We were reading the play better and showed the relentlessness within we really pride ourselves on."

T'ara Ceasar once again paced the offense with 15 kills and a .316 hitting clip. Freshman Mallory Hernandez picked up a season-high 13 kills while hitting .619 in the match.

Meghan Donovan assisted on 42 kills (three-set season high) with two aces, and eight digs. Kendall Glover had 26 digs, the most by a Bulldog in a three-set match this season.

The Bulldogs used a 26-24 set one win to take a 1-0 lead in the match. NC State used a five-point run to take an 8-5 lead early; however, Georgia immediately answered with four-straight to retake a one-point lead at 9-8. NC State retook the lead and held it to an 18-15 advantage. Georgia tied it at 18 then both teams proceeded to go back-and-forth. Georgia drew set point at 24-23 followed by a kill by Keira Moore to retie it. Two NC State attack errors secured the win for Georgia in the first, 26-24.

Ceasar and Ritchie each had four kills while Hernandez had three to begin the match. The first set featured 12 ties and the lead changed hands eight times.

Down by five, Georgia highlighted the second set with a seven-point run to take a 17-15 lead on the Wolfpack. Georgia used its newfound lead en route to a 25-22 set two victory and widening the lead in the match to 2-0.

At the end of the second set, Hernandez had already set a season high with 11 kills to lead the Bulldogs. Ceasar had 10 entering the third set.

Georgia led much of the third set, but NC State remained close to the Bulldogs throughout the set. Georgia was able to keep the Wolfpack at bay long enough to a 25-21 set three win, securing the sweep.

Black remarked on Georgia's non-conference schedule, "This has been a great preseason for us. Lots of really good teams and we've put ourselves in challenging situations that have prepared us really well for SEC play. We're looking forward to getting after it this week and opening conference play this Friday."

Georgia opens Southeastern Conference play Friday evening at Stegeman Coliseum. The Bulldog play host to the LSU Tigers. First serve is set for 7 p.m. The Bulldogs then travel to Texas A&M on Sunday.
