Saturday's Showdown Between The Bulldogs & Blue Raiders

Saturday's matchup between the third-ranked Georgia Bulldogs (2-0) and the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (1-1) will be the second-ever between the two schools. The first clash came in 2003 in Athens with then eighth-ranked Georgia posting a 29-10 victory despite incurring a school record 18 penalties for 129 yards.

In the first meeting with the Blue Raiders, the Bulldogs only led 10-3 at the half. Michael Cooper scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and Billy Bennett kicked three field goals to pace the Georgia offense.

Back Between The Hedges

The Bulldogs passed their first SEC road test last Saturday against No. 24 South Carolina, registering a 41-17 victory over the Gamecocks. It marked the most points the Bulldogs have ever scored in Columbia in the series that dates back to 1894. Also, the 24-point margin of victory was the most in Columbia since 1971. Georgia now has opened the season with two straight games of 40+ points for the first time since 2012. That year, Georgia scored at least 40 points in its first five games before falling to South Carolina in Columbia to drop to 5-1. The 2012 squad would go 12-2 overall, win the SEC Eastern Division and the Capital One Bowl over Nebraska.

A Glance At The Blue Raiders

Middle Tennessee, which is located in Murfreesboro, Tenn., is a member of Conference USA. They are coached by Rick Stockstill who is in his 13th season. Stockstill's son, Brent, is the team's starting quarterback. This is one of seven active sons playing for their father who is their head coach, and the only head coach/starting QB combo in Division I-A. Last year, they went 7-6 including defeating Arkansas State in the Camellia Bowl.

MTSU opened the season with a 35-7 loss at Vanderbilt, however it was only 14-7 early in the third quarter before the Commodores exploded for the game's final 21 points. This past Saturday, MTSU defeated Tennessee-Martin 61-37 at Floyd Stadium in its home opener. UT-Martin managed 460 total yards and recovered an onside kick to pull within 10 with nine and a half minutes left, but MTSU came away with a victory. The Blue Raiders' 61 points was the most since tallying 77 against Florida Atlantic in 2014.

New Look At Tailback

Sophomore QB Jake Fromm returns to direct the Bulldog offense. Georgia is replacing tailbacks Nick Chubb and Sony Michel. They completed their Bulldog career in 2017 as the top tandem in college football history, amassing 8,407 rushing yards and 77 rushing touchdowns. With the duo now playing in the NFL, Georgia is looking to its next wave of talented tailbacks including sophomore D'Andre Swift and juniors Elijah Holyfield and Brian Herrien. Swift started the first two games and is leading the corps with 20 carries for 107 yards two touchdowns. In the most recent contest at #24 South Carolina, Holyfield had career highs with nine carries for 79 yards and a score. In fact, all three backs scored against the Gameocks and against Austin Peay and Swift finished with 12 carries for 64 yards and Herrien had seven for 45 in the matchup at USC.

Bulldog Graduates

Georgia has three players on this year's roster who have already earned their undergraduate degrees. The players who received their undergraduate degrees include: DL Jay Hayes (Notre Dame-Film, Television, Theater), P Landon Stratton (Murray State-Occupational and Health Safety) and OL Sean Fogarty (UGA-History). Hayes is pursuing a Master's degree in Financial Planning while Stratton is enrolled in the Master's program for Learning, Leadership and Organizational Development. Fogarty is taking a full load of undergraduate courses.

All of the SEC players who have achieved an undergraduate degree will be sporting the SEC Graduate patch on their uniforms.

When Georgia looked for a new head coach after the 2015 season, the arrows pointed to Kirby Smart, longtime Alabama defensive coordinator and former UGA player and assistant. The 2017 Associated Press SEC Coach of the Year has not disappointed.

In his first year leading the Bulldogs in 2016, Georgia extended its school record to 20 consecutive bowl appearances and posted five fourth-quarter comebacks including wins over No. 8 Auburn and No. 22 North Carolina. He led UGA to an 8-5 final record, which included a victory over TCU in the Liberty Bowl.

In 2017, Smart directed UGA to a 13-2 record, an SEC title, a win at The Rose Bowl Game during the CFP semifinal and a spot in the National Championship. He was named the Maxwell Football Club's George Munger National Coach of the Year. Before 2017, the Bulldogs last SEC title was 2005.

He has also made an immediate impact in recruiting, posting the nation's top-ranked class in 2018 and the third-ranked class in 2017. In addition to coaching, Smart oversees the Kirby Smart Family Foundation, which is focused on being champions in the community by supporting and giving back to needy children and families.

Smart officially came home to Georgia on Dec. 6, 2015. But he still had unfinished business at Alabama, which was chasing a national title. He juggled two jobs for a month until January 11, 2016, when the Tide won its fourth national championship in a seven-year span. Twelve hours later, he was at work in Athens.

Dogs Aiming To Have Another Explosive Offense

This marks the first time since 2012 that the Bulldogs have opened up with a pair of 40-plus point performances, highlighted by their 41-17 win at #24 South Carolina.

Georgia averaged 35.4 points/game in 2017. Currently, the Bulldogs are averaging 43.0 points/game.

The 2017 Bulldogs ranked fourth nationally in Red Zone Offense, going 53-for-55, including 39 touchdowns, last year. This season, Georgia is 8-for-9 with seven touchdowns and a field goal and ran out the clock to end the rout of the Gamecocks.

QB Jake Fromm, the 2017 SEC Freshman of the Year, is 14-2 as a starter, including 5-2 versus Top 25 teams.

Georgia also has true freshman QB Justin Fields, who was one of the nation's top recruits. After enrolling in January, he has seen action in the first two games and is 8-for-9 for 71 yards and a touchdown. Fields is averaging 9.0 yards/carry with 36 yards on four carries.

In his career, Fromm has led his team to two comebacks when trailing at the half. One of Georgia's signature wins came with his 2018 Rose Bowl Game performance after the Bulldogs trailed 31-17 at the half and rallied to a 54-48 win in double overtime. Georgia trailed 45-38 with 3:22 remaining in the game before Fromm directed a game-tying drive.

Fromm's first career start came last year at #24 Notre Dame. Trailing 19-17 with 6:47 left in the contest, Fromm directed a nine play, 63-yard drive to set up the go-ahead field goal. He was 3-for-4 for 45 yards during the drive.

A Look At The Line

The Bulldogs return four of five starters on the offensive line, including Freshman All-American tackle Andrew Thomas.

Through the first two games, Georgia's starting line has featured Thomas (LT), redshirt sophomore Solomon Kindley (LG), senior Lamont Gaillard (C), redshirt sophomore Ben Cleveland (RG) and redshirt freshman Isaiah Wilson (RT).

When Thomas went down with a left ankle injury against #24 South Carolina, freshman Cade Mays filled in.

The OL helped pave the way for 473 yards against #24 South Carolina, including 271 on the ground.

Array of Targets

The Bulldogs return six of their top seven receivers from last season, including senior Terry Godwin and junior Mecole Hardman. Godwin was second on the team with 38 catches for 639 yards and six scores while Hardman snagged 25 catches for 418 yards and four touchdowns, including an 80-yard touchdown versus Alabama in the 2018 CFP National Championship Game.

With Godwin resting a lower leg injury versus APSU, 11 different Bulldogs caught a pass. Collectively, they finished with 21 catches for 224 yards and three touchdowns.

Hardman had a career day at #24 South Carolina, hauling in six catches for 103 yards, including a 34-yard touchdown. This was Georgia's first 100-yard receiver since the 2016 Liberty Bowl versus TCU (Isaiah McKenzie, 4-103).

There has been a spirited competition to join Godwin and Hardman at the top of the receiving ranks. Junior Riley Ridley snagged 14 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns in 2017, including a team-best six catches for 82 yards versus Alabama in the National Championship Game. So far in 2018, Ridley has seven catches for 70 yards and a score.

Senior Jayson Stanley, senior Ahkil Crumpton, junior Tyler Simmons and redshirt sophomore newcomer Demetris Robertson continue to compete for playing time. The wideouts are also contributing heavily on special teams as well.

Robertson, a native of Savannah, Ga., and graduate of Savannah Christian, arrived in Athens during preseason camp and was cleared to play for Georgia this fall after spending the last two years at the University of California.

Bulldogs Welcome Three New Coaches

Georgia new faces on the staff include Cortez Hankton (WRs) and Dan Lanning (OLBs). Hankton comes to the Bulldogs after serving as the Vanderbilt receivers coach while Lanning was Memphis' inside linebackers coach.

Scott Fountain will be the additional on-field coach focusing on special teams after serving as the special teams analyst in 2017.

Head coach Kirby Smart is going into his third year with Georgia, as well as Mel Tucker (Fain and Billy Slaughter Defensive Coordinator/secondary), Jim Chaney (offensive coordinator/ TEs), Sam Pittman (OL), James Coley (co-offensive coord./ QBs), Glenn Schumann (ILBs) and Dell McGee (Asst. HC/RBs). Tray Scott (DL) begins his second year with the Bulldogs.

Strong Start To 2018

Georgia's defense held #24 South Carolina to just 17 points, had a Red Zone stop and a pick-six in the SEC opener on the road.

The Bulldog defense posted a shutout in the season opener, limiting Austin Peay to 152 total yards (91 rushing, 61 passing) on 50 plays. Previously, Georgia's last shutout came on Sept. 30, 2017 when it beat Tennessee 41-0 in Knoxville. In the first half, the Governors tallied 81 yards and just four first downs.

The Bulldogs accomplished first half shutouts four times last year, including in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game versus Alabama.

Looking For Leaders At LB

After losing three starters at linebacker off the 2017 squad to graduation and the NFL, Georgia has senior Juwan Taylor, sophomore Monty Rice, junior Tae Crowder and senior Natrez Patrick vying for playing time at ILB.

Rice and Taylor got the start in the 2018 season opener and then Patrick and Taylor started at #24 South Carolina. Rice went on to post a career-high eight tackles versus the Gamecocks while Taylor was credited with a touchdown after DB Deandre Baker dropped the ball at the 1 yard line following an INT return.

With the loss of OLBs Lorenzo Carter and Davin Bellamy to the NFL, senior OLB D'Andre Walker is emerging as the leader on the outside. He had four tackles, including two tackles for loss and a sack, against the Gamecocks. After playing in 41 games leading up to 2018, Walker started his first game in the 2018 season opener and recovered a fumble.

In addition, sophomore Walter Grant also played in 13 games last year and finished with nine stops, including 2.5 tackles for loss from an OLB spot, and will be looked on to continue his development with the Dogs. Grant also got the starting nod for the first time versus APSU at OLB.

Returning Starters Headline Defensive Line Group

The defensive line was effective at #24 South Carolina by limiting the Gamecocks to 54 rushing yards on 20 attempts.

Veterans Tyler Clark and Jonathan Ledbetter anchor a defensive line that lost 2017 senior John Atkins and junior Trenton Thompson.

Clark led the front in the Rose Bowl Game win over #2 Oklahoma with five stops, including a sack and two tackles for loss. Clark was tops among all interior linemen with 41 stops. Ledbetter was next on the list with 38 tackles.

Behind Clark, Ledbetter and junior Julian Rochester, Georgia is rotating in juniors Michael Barnett, Michail Carter, sophomore Devonte Wyatt, senior DaQuan Hawkins-Muckle and graduate transfer Jay Hayes. Hayes arrived in Athens during the summer after graduating from Notre Dame. He had seven tackles during the Bulldogs' win over the Irish in 2017.

Reed, Baker Back To Lead Defensive Backfield

Senior DB Deandre Baker, who has been named a preseason All-American by several outlets, had six stops, two pass breakups and the team's first interception in 2018 (along with a 55-yard return) at #24 South Carolina.

Georgia also welcomes back junior J.R. Reed, a 2017 All- SEC Second Team selection. He finished with three tackles against the Gamecocks and had a pick in the end zone to thwart a scoring chance. In the 2018 season opener, Reed was the leading tackler with six stops.

Sophomore Richard LeCounte made his second consecutive start at South Carolina and led the team with a career-high 10 tackles and a pass breakup.

One of the veterans also expected to make a difference is junior Tyrique McGhee. McGhee was sidelined with a foot injury in the season opener and played sparingly at South Carolina.

The candidates in the secondary who saw action in the first two games included: senior Jarvis Wilson, sophomores William Poole, Deangelo Gibbs, Mark Webb, redshirt freshman Eric Stokes, freshman Tyson Campbell. Campbell had four stops versus the Gamecocks.

Blankenship Back

With one of the nation's top 20 offenses in 2017 scoring 35.4 points/game, preseason All-American candidate PK Rodrigo Blankenship was busy last year, booming 94 kickoffs 9 (a school record 67 for touchbacks), 63 PATs and 20 field goals, including a 51 yarder in overtime of the CFP National Championship Game.

Blankenship set a Rose Bowl Game record by drilling a career- long 55-yard field goal during the 2OT win over #2 Oklahoma. His performance included a 38-yard FG in overtime.

He was a 2017 Groza Award semifinalist.

Last year, 67 of his kickoffs were touchbacks, which was a new school record. The old mark was by Kevin Butler (51 in 1981).

He averaged 41.3 against South Carolina, including a 62 yarder. Camarda graduated from Norcross High School and finished his prep career as one of the nation's top punters last year.

SEC's Leading Punt Returner Back

Junior returner/receiver Mecole Hardman is back in the lineup after having 23 punt returns for 271 yards and an 11.8 average (all of those led the league). Also, Hardman was second in the SEC in kickoff returns with a 25.2 average (20 returns for 505 yards).

RSo. transfer Demetris Robertson had 10 kick returns for 202 yards to total 969 all-purpose yards in his first year at Cal during the 2016 season. He had career highs of six kick returns and 116 kick return yards as well as a career-long kick return of 39 yards at Oregon State in a contest in which he finished with a career-best 145 all-purpose yards.
