ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia soccer fell to Purdue, 1-0, after a late second half goal on Thursday night at the Turner Soccer Complex.
"There's more in us," head coach Billy Lesesne said. "There's more passion in us. There's more collective effort in us, that we didn't see in the second half that I thought we were giving in the first half. I thought we defended well for many moments. They put us under a lot of pressure in the second half and I thought we were very resilient for the most part. We had some really good scoring opportunities and unfortunately for us they picked one up late, we then had to focus more on the attacking end of things, but overall I thought we defended well as a unit."
The Bulldogs (2-2-1) and Boilermakers (3-0-1) kept things even at midfield, neither team taking a shot for the first 16 minutes of the game.
With six minutes left in the first half, sophomore Delaney Erwin showed her speed on the attack, but a great save by Purdue goalkeeper Katie Luce kept UGA scoreless.
Following that play, it was Purdue with the shot and Georgia goalkeeper Emory Wegener with the diving save to keep the score knotted at zero heading into halftime.
Coming back to action Reagan Glisson and Dani Murguia had back-to-back shots on goal, but failed to connect. Glisson again went for the goal on a breakaway but was blocked by Purdue edging out the shot. The Bulldogs, however, were able to keep the Boilermakers from shooting on goal until the 69th minute. This was Purdue's opportunity to take the lead but the ball bounced off the post rendering the score unchanged.
With fifteen minutes left to play, the Boilermakers' Kylie Hase notched the first goal of the night. A corner kick from Glisson gave Boyan an opportunity to tie the match but she was unable to find the back of the net.
As seconds ticked off the clock Glisson found herself with the ball again and attempted to once again bring the score even. The shot went wide as time expired, securing the Purdue 1-0 win.
UGA faces Virginia Tech (2-0-2) on Sunday, September 2 at 2 p.m. at the Turner Soccer Complex. Georgia played Virginia Tech for the first time last season, leaving Blacksburg with a loss. The Bulldogs hope to even the series at their home on Sunday.
