Jokic Earns All-America Honors, Bulldogs Nab No. 7 Final Ranking

May 30, 2018 | Women's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. – Capping an already extensive list of accomplishments, Katarina Jokic tacked on ITA Singles All-America honors thanks to a top-20 finish in the final 2018 ITA Singles Rankings, released Wednesday afternoon by the Oracle/ITA office.

The Bulldogs (18-7) finished seventh in the team rankings, representing the 29th time Georgia has concluded the season ranked in the top-10 under head coach Jeff Wallace.

Six SEC schools filled the top-25 with national runner-Up Vanderbilt occupying the No. 2 spot followed by the Bulldogs. On Georgia's heels was Ole Miss at No. 8, and then Florida (No. 11), South Carolina (No. 12), and Auburn (No. 24).

With a final No. 17 ranking, Jokic ended her first collegiate season as the highest ranked freshman in the nation – a distinction she held for most of the year. The Novi Grad, Bosnia native reached as high as No. 2 in the country during the season. A strong fall campaign paired with playing the No. 1 singles court in the dual season gave Jokic ample opportunity to face elite competition. Jokic played 10 matches against eight players that finished ahead of her in the final rankings, going 5-3 with two unfinished matches. The losses were against top-ranked Astra Sharma from Vanderbilt and National Champion Arianne Hartono of Ole Miss.

Jokic's All-American distinction joins her previous accolades of SEC Freshman of the Year, ITA Southeast Regional Rookie of the Year, SEC First Team, SEC All-Freshman Team, and ITA SE Regional Singles Champion. The freshman extended Georgia's streak of having a player in the NCAA Singles Championship to 33-straight years. Overall, Jokic concluded the season with a team-high 31-8 singles mark including 13 ranked wins.

Also garnering final singles rankings were senior Kennedy Shaffer (No. 87), sophomore Marta Gonzalez (No. 108), and freshman Morgan Coppoc (No. 110). On the doubles side, sophomore Elena Christofi and Coppoc checked out at No. 13, while Jokic and senior Mariana Gould finished at No. 21.
